Combat is now taking place inside the highly symbolic town of Bint Jbeil in south Lebanon.
In 2000, after the Israeli withdrawal from south Lebanon, Nasrallah gave his victory speech from the town, proclaiming that Israel is weaker than a spider's web. In the 2006 War, Israel failed to take the town, solidifying in Israeli public opinion the belief that Israel did not win that war.
The relevant quote from Nasrallah's 2000 speech: "This Israel, with its nuclear weapons and most advanced warplanes in the region, I swear by Allah, is actually weaker than a spider's web... Israeli society is war-weary and lacks the resilience to endure a bloody conflict or suffer casualties. Israel may appear strong from the outside, but it's easily destroyed and defeated."
Nasrallah's unrelenting belief in these ideas, despite a year-long war in Gaza, contributed to his death. He continued to assume Israel will not assassinate him because it does not want an all-out war against Hezbollah, and did not leave his hideout, known to Israeli intelligence.

I have just spoken with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam. I expressed France’s full solidarity in the face of the indiscriminate strikes carried out by Israel in Lebanon today, which resulted in a very high number of civilian casualties. We condemn these strikes in the strongest possible terms. They pose a direct threat to the sustainability of the ceasefire that has just been reached. Lebanon must be fully covered by it. I reiterated the need to preserve Lebanon’s territorial integrity and France’s determination to support the efforts of the Lebanese authorities to uphold the country’s sovereignty and implement the Hezbollah disarmament plan.

Hezbollah dragged Lebanon into the war, but Israel’s right to defend itself does not justify inflicting such massive destruction. Israeli strikes killed hundreds last night, making it hard to argue that such heavy-handed actions fall within self-defence. Israeli actions are putting the U.S.-Iran ceasefire under severe strain. The Iran truce should extend to Lebanon. Hezbollah must disarm. The EU supports Lebanon’s efforts to disarm Hezbollah.

There are tens of thousands of Michiganders with deep ties to Lebanon— family, friends, and ancestral homes. Today, many anxiously checked in on loved ones amid significant Israeli airstrikes and civilian casualties. My heart goes out to these families, along with so many others from the greater Detroit area who have been living in fear for loved ones in the greater Middle East.
For a ceasefire deal to be viable, it must cover the full scope of this regional conflict, including Lebanon. The U.S. negotiators should help prevent further loss of civilian life by sitting down with all parties and being transparent about the deal on the table and how to bring the war to a reasonable end.

For what it's worth, I think America should cancel its alliance with Israel, which is obviously a bad and unhelpful ally. But unlike leftists and rightists, I don't actually think canceling it will fix any of our fundamental problems, or help people in Gaza.
