At #AUF2 in Nairobi, the NGOs Forum on Sustainable Urban Development convened voices from across Africa and the Global South to reimagine the future of our cities. Representing PACJA, our Head of Policy, Advocacy, and Communications, Philip Kilonzo underscored a critical message: There is no sustainable urbanization without climate resilience and justice. As climate impacts intensify floods, heatwaves, and inequality, our cities are becoming the frontline of the crisis. He called for: Stronger #SouthSouth cooperation to co-create local solutions Inclusive, people-centered & climate-resilient urban planning Meaningful inclusion of CSOs in decision-making Accessible climate finance for vulnerable urban communities. From #AUF2 to #WUF13, the Global South must move beyond participation to agenda-setting and collective leadership. #ClimateJustice #SustainableCities #Africa #UrbanDevelopment

Our fourth webinar on the analysis of Addis Ababa Declaration has just concluded; thank you to everyone who joined! Special thanks to Philip Kilonzo @Philkilonzo for expertly moderating and setting the stage, challenging us to rethink whether Africa is truly ready to move from commitments to implementation. A key highlight from Eugene Nforngwa: “Without strong implementation… commitments will remain aspirational rather than transformational.” @Eugene_Nforngwa emphasized that while the Declaration sets bold targets on climate finance, energy transition, and resilience, the real test lies in execution. He stressed that the focus must now shift to action, turning ambition into concrete results through accountability, coordination, and inclusive participation across all actors The message is clear: the future of Africa’s climate agenda depends not on what is said, but on what is done. #ClimateJustice #AddisAbabaDeclaration #AfricaClimateSummit2 #RoadtoCop31

#AGNStrategicMeeting Rona Ali AHMED, International Organization for Migration(IOM) – UN Migration Special Liaison Office to the AU and United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA): “Sub-Saharan Africa recorded 19.3 million internal displacements in 2024, including 7.8 million caused by disasters, underscoring the scale of climate-induced movement. IOM’s three strategic pillars for addressing climate mobility include; developing solutions for people to move, for people on the move, and for people to stay. Examples include efforts in West Africa to reduce displacement and enable regular migration pathways; support to pastoralist communities in Kenya to safeguard trans-humance routes and diversify livelihoods; and initiatives in Morocco where diaspora engagement promotes agro-ecology, strengthens food security, and creates green jobs in rural areas.” @UNmigration @UNEP @UNFCCC @AfDB_Group @ECA_OFFICIAL @AfricanClimate @Amref_Worldwide @Afsafrica @PACJA1 @_AfricanUnion @gatesfoundation @AfricaAAI

“The impacts of climate change are here to stay. Climate finance is needed to address these impacts.” At the 5th Africa Regional Conference on Loss & Damage, Gift Numeri, Board Chairperson of CSONECC, underscored the urgency of mobilizing resources to respond to the growing climate crisis. He highlighted the need for innovative, locally driven solutions calling for funds like the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) to support climate action. Even in the absence of donor support, countries like Malawi can strengthen adaptation, mitigation, and response to loss and damage. Africa must invest in its own resilience while continuing to demand global accountability. #LossAndDamage #ClimateJustice #AfricaClimateAction #Malawi #LDConference26

"Implementation must move beyond declarations to real action at country level.” At the 5th Africa Regional Conference on Loss & Damage, PACJA’s Head of Policy, Advocacy & Communications, Philip Kilonzo, emphasized that Africa must shift from commitments to delivery, ensuring climate decisions translate into real impact for communities. He highlighted the need for fair, grant-based climate finance, reforms to global financial systems, and stronger accountability, noting that loss & damage is not just a climate issue, but a matter of justice and economic transformation. Africa must lead with a unified voice and push for systems that deliver for frontline communities. #LossAndDamage #ClimateJustice #AfricaClimateAction #Malawi

Last week, we highlighted the Pan-African Parliament’s consultations on the Draft Model Law on Sustainable Soil Management in Africa. Today, we take a step further: why soils must be central in Africa’s climate justice agenda. Healthy soils are more than an agricultural issue — they are the foundation of Africa’s resilience. - Food Security: Fertile soils sustain crop yields and secure livelihoods for millions. - Adaptation: Soils regulate water, reduce flood risks, and store carbon — making them a natural climate solution. - Resilience: Strong soils buffer communities against droughts, heatwaves, and degradation. Degraded soils mean weakened adaptation, food insecurity, and fragile ecosystems. For Africa, where 60% of livelihoods depend on land, soil protection is non-negotiable. PACJA continues to emphasize: climate justice must start from the ground up. Protecting soils is protecting people. #PACJA #ClimateJustice #SoilGovernance #Adaptation #FoodSecurity

🌍 Farmers at the Frontlines of Africa’s Climate Agenda At the 6th East African Farmers Federation (EAFF) Congress in Kigali, PACJA Executive Director Dr. Mithika Mwenda issued a clear call: “Without farmers, Africa’s survival is at risk.” Smallholder farmers feed Africa, employ up to 80% of the workforce, yet face the sharpest blows of climate change. Agriculture remains underfunded and rain-dependent, even as governments spend 5–15% of GDP on disasters. Dr. Mwenda linked these realities to global processes: ✅ At COP29, Africa demanded USD 1.3 trillion annually in grants, but only USD 300B was agreed. ✅ The Global Goal on Adaptation must be fast-tracked, with clear means of implementation. ✅ Just Transition Work Programmes must be country-led, with skills, renewables, and no blanket bans on transitional fuels. ✅ Loss & Damage funds must be new, predictable, and accessible to frontline communities. He also stressed that women do 60–80% of agricultural work but own less than 20% of land, demanding gender-responsive solutions. PACJA continues to mobilize farmers and non-state actors into a common African voice ahead of COP30. #PACJA #ClimateJustice #Adaptation #JustTransition #Agriculture #Farmers
