I was detained by Border Patrol and Customs for 90 minutes coming back from a @RoyalCaribbean cruise today in Florida. After they rifled through all my belongings, read my personal journal, and confiscated my phone and computer, I had to explain to them that the @FreeStateNH is a non-violent, peaceful libertarian movement that builds community, culture and political change. We were invited to New Hampshire in the early 2000s by the Governor of the state. We reject violence as a path to creating change. In detail, I had to explain the nature of the Defend the Guard movement and assure them that I was not part of a violent extremist group seeking to raise a militia for insurrection against the government. At one point during my detention, I asked for clarification on what rights I had here as a U.S. citizen and was told that they did not need a warrant for anything in my possession, including all my electronic devices. They eventually let me go. Truth be told, I am shaken up and in shock right now.

@MikeNanceJr @micah_erfan That's why Trump called Waltz to offer condolences, and Mike Lee put up a post expressing his horror at the shooting. Oh, right, they didn't, because they support far-right nuts who want to shoot people; in fact Trump pardoned thousands of criminals like that.

@micah_erfan It doesn’t matter if he supported Trump or not. Every representative of government on the right condemns this behavior. This person was not represented in the government, no matter how much you people try to twist this. It absolutely disgusting

@krismicinski My student is submitting a math-heavy paper this week, and the process of getting those proofs done was anything but linear. (of course, without Mathematica and a few other things it would have taken 5 times longer...)

@benryanwriter @DKThomp No. Would *you* invest 100s of millions or even billions in building manufacturing capacity when Trump could change his mind next week?

@DKThomp Is there any substance to the argument that these policies would help US manufacturing in the long term?

We really did it. We took a growing US manufacturing economy, declared it broken, started a trade war, and ... broke US manufacturing. In last 48 hours: - Philly Fed Survey: "New orders fell sharply, from 8.7 in March to -34.2, its lowest reading since April 2020" - NY Fed Survey: Expected orders and shipments plunging Again, this is a policy to revive US manufacturing.

@RachelBitecofer So the entire Democratic caucus in the House was wrong, and the vast majority in the Senate? That doesn't make sense. I think DJT secretly threatened Schumer or paid him off, and Schumer will never tell. He's compromised, and needs to be stripped of his leadership position.

We are very lucky Schumer blocked the shutdown. The choice was yes on THAT CR or a shutdown giving Trump and Elon total control of the government. There’s no leverage when the other party WANTS to shut down the government.

Hi @elonmusk, Yesterday I had an informant infiltrate one of the protests at Tesla dealerships and they told her a few things: 1. These protests are only happening in contested congressional districts 2. They’re being funded by 501c4 charities being given dark money from Democrat politicians of these districts 3. They’re organized through facebook groups since 𝕏 is monitored by pro Elon people Here is a copy of their prepared anti-Elon chants:

This is Trump’s first major loss. When we fight, we win. We may not have majorities in the House and the Senate, but we DO have the power to loudly educate and mobilize against the mass looting the Trump admin is attempting against our veterans, healthcare, education, and more.

@mcmecum @opinonhaver Bitcoin is limited by design to about 250K transactions per day. Globally. That’s laughable. Of course crypto bros invented a way to escape this limit - it’s basically a bank, literally centuries-old tech.

So, some simple reasons for liking crypto would simply be faster and cheaper transactions sent anywhere in the world. These networks charge far less than our typical banks for sending value and they can clear it in minutes versus days - even for large amounts. There are also innovative peer to peer business models that can run on them. For example you can register your WiFi network and offer services to paying customers using crypto to settle their use of your network. This has created the world’s largest WiFi network. You can eliminate the need for future title work and title insurance by converting your title to an NFT on a blockchain. This is 18B dollars per year to do this in the US. Crypto can handle it for pennies on the dollar. You can easily enable fractional ownership models of assets like real estate. We can trace goods in supply chains with a blockchain to ensure their veracity (like all the fake olive oil or organic goods). This can stop billions in fraud. In many cases contracts can be executed as code and eliminate administrative costs in their management. As the world becomes more and more data driven, this is increasingly important. You don’t have to even realize that the business you’re working with is executing on a blockchain and benefitting from this technology. You don’t have to be an investor, you can simply be a user. There are so many more use cases, I haven’t even scratched the surface.

@ndkirschmann It is sad when a woman thinks abortion is the most important thing in their life. A smart woman understands how not to get pregnant. A foolish woman kills their unborn child.

@KenGWiebe @MelissaDaly326 @teddyschleifer It’s fairly straightforward - given the number of entrants, each entry in a fair lottery has an expected value. I can’t find numbers for how many signed up, but it’s probably tens of $ each, possibly a lot more.

We're on hour three of the Elon Musk super PAC lottery lawsuit in a court in Philadelphia. Larry Krasner has been testifying that the entire premise of the Musk lottery was a "scam" and a "grift" and "disingenuous." The Musk team has been arguing that this was not a "lottery" because its $1 million winners were actually pre-selected based on whom would be the best spokespeople for the super PAC. Team Musk says their winners were not "random."

Tucker Carlson says "human forces" did not create nuclear technology. Instead, it was demons. "I have never met a person who can isolate the moment when nuclear technology became known to man. So, where did it come from exactly? ... it's very clear to me these are demonic."

@jfleming2870 Boston has about 20% more people than Wyoming. They both had about the same number of murders so far this year. And unlike a lot of red states, Wyoming really is a pretty safe place.

Like many profs I re-use programming assignments with minor mods. Googling shows a tutoring outfit selling solutions to my current lab for $35, and I bought it to check for cheating. I got the original assignment files with no solution. Funny, I still feel ripped off.

@Swilua I hope I'm not too far off the mark in telling my PhD students to use standard high school-style topic sentence structure, and let better writers (including hopefully their future selves) structure things more flexibly.

@Swilua There are languages which don't have paragraphs; I may on occasion review papers (in English) by native speakers of one or more of these languages. There may not be a *right* way to structure and break English paragraphs, but there are certainly plenty of *wrong* ways.
