@PlasmaticNinja @Mr_Hehe4 @Critical_Scribe Or they could do something really wild and make it like the new God of War or something where it’s highly linear but with a strong narrative. Just make it clear it’s not a traditional Zelda game. TP tried larping as Zelda went really was not.

Here’s a spicy take:
If someone made a game almost exactly like Breath of the Wild but it wasn’t labeled as a Zelda game, it would have gotten 7-8/10s across the board due to a lack of story, weak dungeons, and weapon degradation.
I wouldn’t have given it that, and I actually LOVE both Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, but people let Zelda “get away” with a lot more than other games and it gets to be a bit much to hear at times.
If something is not very good in one game, slapping it into the Zelda world doesn’t magically make the thing good. This goes for any Nintendo property btw.

@CrimsonSmasher @sharp_ssbm They definitely had actual later prototypes they didn’t show which probably would have been more interesting. But I do think they started with the NES game and “broke” it by removing all structure it had then saying it was “inspired” by it.

Actual missed opportunity from Nintendo to not make BOTW a new IP. There’s almost no Zelda DNA in the game. No OST, no structure, no story, full voice acting, the main character costume isn’t Link’s. Change the name of the map and the two heroes and there’s nothing of Zelda left.

@GamerDragonSal @BringBackBanjoK Nope. That’s surface level stuff. Zelda DNA refers to how the game FEELS. The whole point is that if you removed the Zelda races and names and were playing as different characters, it wouldn’t feel like Zelda. But if you did the same for TP or SS, it still would.

The hero is of a knights bloodline, there’s light and dark world, lost woods holds the sword, links hair, sages trapped Gannon, Kokariko village, Ganon infects the world, and on and on.

@CrimsonSmasher @sharp_ssbm I can see the NES styled prototype being real but it doesn’t mean much. This wouldve been very early and was really only to brainstorm the emergent gameplay i.e. burning shit and cutting trees. It’s the programming equivalent of doing a sketch on a napkin.

@BringBackBanjoK Nah, BOTW has plenty of Zelda elements. It's literally heavily inspired by the original Zelda, so of anything, it's more Zelda than OoT, MM, WW and so on.

It was the fact that you can go anywhere at once and it’s still the right direction to progress the story. It’s that you can directly fight the final boss from the start. (1/2)

@FallowRealms @Critical_Scribe TP got tons of love but it wasn't a change in form like OoT or BoTW so it didn't attract a new audience like they did. People are much more critical of TP now and I think the same thing will happen with BoTW (if it isn't already).

@Critical_Scribe Don't really agree with this. It was a lot of people's first ever Zelda game, and those people often have it in their favorites. I actually think it gets undue criticism because its constantly compared to the formula that came before it. The game innovated.
