@CatholicPods Saying the nation was held together by a common creed could be conservative if we therefore made sure people accepted that creed, maintained and propagated its right understanding. Instead we get "America is just an idea, but also no one needs to believe in that idea"

This is anti-human anti-culture ideology which our founders, for all their Enlightenment-influenced flaws, did not believe. It's fundamentally unconservative. Also a horrible, ignorant calumny against European monarchies to claim that they rejected the notion that there are rights that come from God rather than from the state.
reason@reason

"Our nation is not founded on a religion. It's not based on a common culture, even, or heritage. ... We're a creedal nation," Justice Neil Gorsuch tells @nickgillespie on The Reason Interview podcast.

@duncanreyburn In my last book, the robot abbot argues that as a machine his actions have no will, and therefore cannot be moral or immoral, and he therefore can mandate harsh asceticism for society without the moral inhibitions of human religious leaders Would be fascinating to see it happen

The moment I stopped listening to Reddit “Byzantine rite experts” and actually began praying the rosary, I realized that I just made the best decision I could ever make in my whole life. Pray the rosary.

@CatholicPods @mikepantile At face its interesting he sees "dying to self" as meaning he does her will, without any note that the wife must also die to self If both parties must give up their own will equally and in the same way, the question of where to attend mass has no solution

Dying to self actually means making decisions that aren’t easy that are for the spiritual benefit of your family. Which may include making your wife upset temporarily. Effeminacy and irresponsibility are sins of the fall. Let’s just call it what it is.
Mike, Centering Prayer Strongman@Ring__The_Bell

My wife prefers NO, I prefer EF. Part of marriage is dying to self, so we go to NO. If I really want to go to the EF for X or Y feast, she happily comes with me. Obedience doesn't come in to the question because neither of us are freaks.

@shagbark_hick I would like some actual info on this whole world of homeschoolers stuck at a 2nd grade reading level. I've known many homeschooled people and never heard of such a thing except extreme fringe criminal cases of someone who kept their kid in a closet.

Look, pro-homeschooling people are piling on this guy but he's not wrong at all. I know of families who are straight-up failing to teach their children beyond a 2nd-grade education. Like 16-year-old kids who don't know what the Capital of the US is, have never heard of Toronto, and could not perform a basic algebra problem. While it's true that there are many excellent homeschooling families whose instruction far exceeds that of any public school, the fact is that the American system of "school your kids however you want" does also yield a lot of severely stunted kids who get stuck playing "catch-up" for the rest of their lives. My wife was homeschooled, we might homeschool, I'm not averse to the practice per se, but it's a fact that there's a whole world of multi-generational homeschoolers who are not and will not rise above a 2nd or 3rd grade education level by their own volition. Should the state intervene in these cases? I dunno, the answer to the question is not as "easy" as many make it out to be. The idea of barely getting through 'Mary Had a Little Lamb' at the age of 16 should be appalling, and it IS happening in some American homeschooler families.
Just Jim@JimsTweets

Do Homeschool kids just like, not have to take tests or exams or get grades? How does the government know if the child is actually getting an education and not just like, being neglected

@nickycantaloupe @CatholicPods In the byzantine church we typically have psalm 148 (the psalms of praise) with an alleluia between verses. Works quite well- theres music, you can sing, but its not something you have to think about or get out a book

@CatholicPods I like a chanted antiphon with verses. It’s repetitive and not too distracting so I feel like it’s easy to tune out for those who want to just pray silently, and it’s easy to sing for those who want to sing, and if you’re just sitting there bored then you’re hearing scripture.

The Convert; or, Leaves from My Experience is such a great book, and Orestes Brownson is a somewhat prominent author I'm surprised there isn't a cheap popular edition Strong intellectual conversion narrative, thats also a taxonomy of both magisterial protestantism and odd socialist and transcendentalist cults as they existed around the time of the Civil War

@Rach4Patriarchy @mysticalcolt All the "restrain her" or "walk away" comments assume she won't be doing the same thing when he let's go, that she won't be blocking his way grabbing him, trying to hold the car door open etc Having been in a similar situation, I'll just say there's no obvious "one easy trick"
