A friend of mine did exactly that. For two straight years at a startup, his life looked painfully boring from the outside. No social circle to speak of. No constant updates or flexing online on insta. Just long days, longer nights, and a quiet routine of work, learning, and recovery. He didn’t complain. He didn’t broadcast how hard he was working. Stayed silent and focused while others chased balance, visibility, or validation. When the startup chaos hit, he was the one people trusted because he knew the systems inside out. When things broke, he was already there. Five years in, that same “boring” phase compounded. He moved into a Staff Engineer role while most people were still trying to figure out their next switch. No drama, no noise just results. That’s the part no one talks about: going far often looks lonely and uneventful in real time. But silence, boredom, and privacy create the space where real growth happens.

As a person who wants to go far in life, learn to be bored, silent, and private.

Just had coffee with my old boss, the ex-CTO who built our startup from scratch back in the day. Dude was a beast, scaled us to 200 engineers, then left to go fractional CTO for like three hot AI/web3 companies at once. Pulling easy $800K+ a year across retainers, equity kicks, advisory gigs. Always on calls, Slack pinging nonstop, jumping between timezones. We sit down last. week and the difference was very much visible. Phone stays face down the whole time. No vibration checks, no "one sec" excuses. We talk for two straight hours about life, family, random systems optimization tricks, even politics without a single interruption. He laughs and says "man I finally turned off all notifications except family group chat". Turns out he quietly hit his FIRE number last year, sold some early equity from one of the startups that exited, parked everything in boring index funds and munis. For those wondering what changed: he lived on maybe 40% of his income even during the crazy fractional phase. Kept renting a normal 2-bedroom instead of upgrading to the loft, drove the same old wagonar, cooked most meals. Lifestyle stayed flat while income exploded. His burn rate is around $120K a year for a comfortable family life. At 4% withdrawal rule that means he needed $3M portfolio. Took him about 8 years of high earnings plus aggressive saving to get there once he went fractional. Deep insight for anyone grinding tech or trading side hustles: the math is simple but execution is everything. Track every expense for 90 days (I use a plain Google sheet: date, amount, category, notes). Find your real annual spend, multiply by 25, that is your freedom number. Then ruthlessly protect the gap between income and expenses. My ex-CTO automated it: 60% of every invoice went straight to Vanguard total market funds before he could touch it. Never saw the money, never spent it. He actually built passive income too mostly with crypto yield farming. Seeing him now completely calm, present, choosing which projects excite him instead of needing them for bills. That is real wealth. Not the CTO title or the fractional checks, but owning every minute of your day. If you are reading this and still jumping at notifications, start small today: calculate your actual burn, automate savings, build one tiny passive stream. Freedom compounds faster than you think when you finally stop the creep.

Recently grabbed coffee with an old friend who is an Investment Banking VP making $500K+ per year Every five minutes, checks his work phone for emails. Can barely hold a conversation without getting distracted At one point, he starts writing an email to himself with the the subject line “Test” I ask him what he is doing. He says it’s odd that he goes this long without receiving an email so wants to make sure his phone is still working Just goes to show that some people are not just working for money, they are enslaved by it. Regardless of how much they make, they don’t fully own their lives. The worst part is that this friend has allowed lifestyle creep to set in. He spends most of what he earns on expensive rent, watches, wine and everything in between. He is not even close to being able to leave the rat race

I won’t deactivate again but I will be taking an extended leave of absence, sorry to anyone I upset that really wasn’t the goal at all, I do see how it’s a bad decision and a poor joke about a token but hope you all can learn from this mistake. Ttyl

I believe China, (and Asia in general) will fuel the next run It will take quite some time to melt Western cynicism towards this space, but the East is ascending and yearning to flex You should be hanging out in WeChat Many future pumps will be on NFTs none of your circle know
