No10 source points out that, contrary to what Kevin Hollinrake says, McSweeney’s phone was stolen on October 10 last year, and the Humble Address forcing the release of all Mandelson documents wasn’t passed until February 4. “The Tories are now just making up lies.”
Kevin Hollinrake MP@kevinhollinrake

Morgan McSweeney’s government phone “stolen” only days before he was forced to release it and its contents? Come off it. The whole thing stinks to high heaven. What are the Government trying to hide? The public aren’t fools. Publish everything. Now.

The Daily Express has broken the scandal of Angela Rayner getting paid £19k for a five hour speech! Tomorrow they will report on the scandal of Boris Johnson earning millions for one 40 minute speech of meandering substance-free piffle. He only has one speech! Just kiddin!

@BBCNews Such rubbish - 16/17 year olds have always been able to find jobs and always will. Shops, cafes, restaurants, hotels etc will always need cheap flexible labour.

@poglejaydee @Helen_Whately ? Reduction in face to face interviews was introduced as part of pandemic measures. Labour supported this in the immediate and future term. The Conservatives are seeking to bring back face to face appointments and to clamp down on spurious claims.

"After returning from her luxury holiday in Mexico, Wieland even filed a fresh review asserting that her condition had deteriorated. She has since admitted failing to report a change in circumstances and has been ordered to repay the £23,662 she wrongly claimed between 2021 and 2024." ask Mel Stride (October 2022 – July 2024): Held the position throughout the remainder of Rishi Sunak’s premiership until the 2024 general election .. he was benefits minister you utter walnut!

@Bbmorg Hardly. Her mistimed and poorly communicated economic plan was unhelpful. The market damage was largely caused by the Bank of England’s failures, they’ve accepted that. Gilts are higher now than under Truss.

@stuey_beef And precisely where it was stolen. The idea this will be a vague memory is ludicrous. The facts must come to light. If then we see evidence of a theft we can apologise to McSweeny.

Scotland Yard reopening this case isn’t some routine admin. It’s an admission that the original handling of Starmer’s chief of staff’s “stolen” government phone — wrong address, no proper statement, no tracker follow‑up, no urgency over possible Mandelson messages — was a joke. Starmer and McSweeney must give sworn evidence to Parliament on exactly what was on that phone, who ordered it wiped, and why the story keeps changing. Until then, every decent person should assume they’re hiding something.

@jessasstrophe Why did Truss last 45 days? Because when she made the oversights on the mini-budget….she had the common decency to resign! Starmer has gone leaps and bounds beyond that and is adopting the socialists ‘we refuse to be fired’ attitude.

@BladeoftheS Utter garbage. Where do you think our money went? It came to Britain, it funded our recovery. The idea that the British electorate would take the option of a fund versus the NHS etc is for the fairies.

🚨NEW: In the middle of an energy supply crisis, Ed Miliband has just stalled the Jackdaw North Sea gas field project AGAIN. Jackdaw could be up and running in time for winter, producing enough gas to heat 1.6 million British homes. However, Ed’s priority is whether it fits into Net Zero and our international climate treaties. Never mind that we would be using higher emission imports of foreign gas if we don’t use Jackdaw. Imports don’t count in our emissions targets, so it’s a sneaky get around for Ed which will make us colder, poorer and less secure. Bad for the environment and for our economy.

@LoftusSteve @johndotwills @TheCriticMag Weber saw its benefits but… The "Iron Cage" (Stahlhartes Gehäuse), he also feared that the rationalisation of society, replacing personal passion and tradition with cold, calculated efficiency, would lead to a "dehumanizing" world. I see it as painful.

I think you are saying "perfect bureaucracy" sarcastically there, but I think that's a real possibility in a positive way. It's some way off, but imagine Government managed by AI. No bias, no waste, no inefficiency. It's one of the ways me might get to the eventual Utopia where Government is so efficient and so lean that it costs a fraction of what it needs now.

Good and thought provoking from Steve @TheCriticMag I would say that, whilst the article is excellent, the early stage impacts of AI at my day job (enterprise software) aren’t what he predicts in the piece, but it’s still a corking read.
Steve Loftus@LoftusSteve

My latest for The Critic. An inspirational piece about the future of work in the era of AI...no, not really. It's about how AI will take your job and how nobody is thinking about how this will fundamentally change how our economies are structured.

@DPJHodges @MatthewStadlen McSweeny is supposedly the best political operator of his generation, he lives in the specific area his phone was stolen - Road and Street are not mistakes easily made. Either he’s not the genius we’re told he was or this is a lie. It’s a lie.

@MatthewStadlen I'm not making an allegation. I'm asking questions, and pointing out the glaring inconsistencies in the Government's story surrounding these events. For some reason you think we should ignore those inconsistencies, stop asking questions and treat the official account as gospel.
