I had the honour of leading a parliamentary mission of the Canada–Africa Parliamentary Association to South Africa (Cape Town, Johannesburg and Pretoria), alongside my co-chair, Member of Parliament Michael Coteau. Our delegation also included Senator Manuelle Oudar, as well as Members of Parliament Dan Mazier and Sébastien Lemire. We met with several South African parliamentarians, including the Speaker of the National Assembly, Thoko Didiza, and the Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces, Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane, as well as government and opposition representatives, business leaders, and civil society organizations. We also exchanged with the Secretary General of the Pan-African Parliament, Lidiema Wabwire, on the prospects for cooperation between the CAAP and the Pan-African Parliament. The visit to Robben Island, the Nelson Mandela Museum and the Nelson Mandela Foundation also allowed us to better understand the historical legacy that continues to influence debates on governance and inclusion. This mission confirms one conviction: the Canada–Africa partnership holds immense potential. I thank Ambassador James Christoff, Canada’s High Commissioner to South Africa, and his team for their support and the excellent organization of this mission. #ParliamentaryDiplomacy

Pink Shirt Day is a time for us to stand together and renew our commitment to address all forms of bullying, including speaking out against homophobic and transphobic bullying in sports, schools, workplaces, and communities.

During my recent parliamentary mission to Ethiopia, I had the pleasure of meeting with the teams at the Embassy of Canada, in the presence of Ambassador Nicolas Simard and Canada’s Special Envoy to Africa, Ambassador Ben-Marc Diendéré. I would like to commend the essential work, professionalism, and dedication of the entire mission staff, with a special mention for the locally engaged employees, whose expertise and deep knowledge of the local context are indispensable to Canada’s diplomatic action.

Members of the Senate Committee on Indigenous Peoples — senators Michèle Audette (Chair), Paul (PJ) Prosper, Kim Pate, Scott Tannas and @SenatorClement — met with youth from Puamun Meshkenu - Parcours Uapikun. Through Parcours Uapikun, Indigenous youth have opportunities to strengthen their well-being, explore their identity and history, and build skills in leadership, communication, and critical thinking. The senators shared insights about their roles, their committee work, and ways for youth to get involved, including opportunities at the Senate. #SenCA #APPA
