You can only watch films from ONE year for the rest of your life. What year are you picking and why?

@SeanTrende By my count, only 1 House race will lack a Dem, while 19 will lack a GOPer. I know you've mentioned that missing GOP votes can be imputed, but most people who crunch the final national votes don't do that.

I should add that I think the system can handle a party winning the popular vote by a point or so but losing the House. But if it stretches to a 3-4 point differential, which is may, it is going to be ugly.

The RCP Average generic ballot has gone from D+8 to D+5 over the past six weeks. Probably just inevitable "Soft Rs coming home" but this starts to get into territory where it is conceivable that Rs hold the House.

@DrewSav I do overall feel that the extended versions are better (even if perhaps too long for your average theatre-goer.) That said, I greatly object to the re-taking of Osgiliath scene in the extended TT, for reasons we can correspond on, if you wish.

The extended editions of the Lord of the Rings trilogy are widely thought of as the default version of those movies but I feel like there's not much analysis on whether they really are the superior versions. It wasn't the extended of ROTK that won Best Picture.

@FreyChristopher I remember getting my first email account upon arrival at UVA, amazed that one could correspond so easily with high school friends at different colleges. No web back then, but I was on USENET too much!

Being late Gen X is perfect timing. Had a childhood without the internet, college without smartphones, grad school and early career without AI, and will get to live a reasonably long and fruitful life before the machines exterminate us all.

@SeanTrende One problem with basing too much on "net House popular vote" is that Dems may well contest all 435 House seats this cycle, while the GOP may not in something like a dozen seats, inc. CA lockouts. (Though that may change if certain states re-open filing.)

Because we live on the worst timeline, we should prepare for a situation where Rs lose the popular vote cleanly (i.e. 51-46, not the 49-48 situation from 2012) but keep the House. Which would be a nightmare.

@xenocryptsite I think this is for a couple reasons. Firstly, you had a full month of such intense focus on FL in 2000 that it simply over-shadowed any nat'l vote concerns. Secondly, Gore's 0.5% nat'l margin was more tie-ish than HRC's 2.1% lead.

(Said this before but 2000 is very funny to me. 2016, you had to read all this tendentious nonsense about how the Electoral College allowed for the revolt of the forgotten man or whatever. But 2000 was just "IDK I guess that happens sometimes, for no reason".)

@bendreyfuss Newt can't be 5. She had already won the 2nd-grade citizenship award, per the photo Ripley found. Also, Carrie Henn was 9 when the movie was filmed.

@baseballcrank My assumption has always been that ESB's Rogue Leader WAS "Rogue 1." After all, in the original movie, there was no Red 1, just Red Leader, Red Two, etc.

Rewatching the start of Empire Strikes Back, noticed there being a Rogue squadron with a Rogue Two (who rescues Han & Luke in the snow) and Rogue Leader (Luke) but no Rogue One. Another bit of Star Wars mythos enriched by Rogue One/Andor.

@JessicaTaylor Purely as a CD-listening experience, I still prefer the original 1976 concept album. Orchestrations and singing are more "rock"-ish, relative to later stage cast recordings.

Yes, I know she sings “Don’t Cry For Me Argentina” outside. It’s still one of my favorite musicals, and if it was playing while I was in London, I couldn’t miss it.

CONFIRMED: The USS Nimitz aircraft carrier strike group is on its way to the Middle East from the South China Sea, a U.S. official tells Fox News. The Nimitz was previously scheduled to replace the USS Carl Vinson carrier strike group which has been deployed for several months, but is now heading to the Middle East ahead of schedule. The two will now be in the Middle East at the same time.  The USS Nimitz is the oldest active aircraft carrier in the U.S. Navy, commissioned on May 3, 1975. Scheduled to be decommissioned in 2026, this is possibly its final sea voyage. This is a very significant symbolic deployment because it was deployed in 1980 and its helicopters that were part of the failed US effort known as Operation Eagle Claw to rescue the American hostages being held at the US Embassy in Tehran. The US has been in a shadow war against Iran ever since.  H/t @Liz_Friden @LucasFoxNews

One of the earliest mentions of pizza on TV was likely I Love Lucy in 1953. Pizza begins to appear in American culture around the early 50's.

@CTIronman No, but for the people who track (are obsessed with?) such things, going from a +35 to +18 Dem margin (and a +45 to +28 Dem margin) is a biggish shift. Opposite of those FL specials...
