Growing up I thought most of the old pirate books were largely fantasy fiction than anything historical, but then I learned about the famous pirate Blackbeard (Edward Teach) having a house in Bath, NC on the Tar river in NC, only a couple hours down river from my home town. Local historians have done a pretty good job piecing together the actual history. What fascinated me the most was that Blackbeard apparently made his childhood friend, a slave named Caesar, a key lieutenant & one of Blackbeard’s most loyal inner-circle men—exactly the kind of childhood connection that both humanized & complicated the pirate life. Pirates did sometimes free enslaved people or give them real status on ships. Diverse crews were common, and freedom was a big draw. But, back in those days, befriending a slave or merely showing respect publicly could make you an outlaw (remember Huckleberry Finn?), which makes you wonder if that could have been a catalyst (along with treasure 😅) to choosing the life of a pirate?
