Just challenging some of the drivel that's posted on here - trying to be objective & factual.

How is it that the Council's processes can allow such a crass intervention in such a historic space? And what needs to be put in place to prevent this happening again?

@Harryjwilliamss @theSpurtle Think this is to ensure that any work scheduled falls within the window. The total period has to include the many days when the work site is barriered off but there's no workmen to be seen.....can't believe a simple kerb realignment / pavement extension would take 100 days.

@DrRAGreen @James_f_kenyon @donturvLDR Not an expert on the 'keyword' search on the Planning portal but all properties granted planning permission (I thought) should either have an identifier of 'FULSTL' or 'CLESTL' ? Does the 'short term let' or 'short-term let' pick up all of these ? Excellent work / thread BTW

@donturvLDR I’m sure they used to have a spreadsheet on the council site with all applications and status listed?

@SaveSCScotland @donturvLDR @scotgov @Edinburgh_CC Isn’t the whole thing so bizarre. In any other walk of life, if you couldn’t report easily on your data inputs you might consider sacking the data handler. Or the system inventor. The systems manager. Someone who is responsible. Anyone.

@parkemmapark @Holledge @PhilipDoggart Seems the 'rules' being suspended due to Covid was misinformation. It was stated by a Council official that the Council's 'no dogs in cemeteries' rule expired in 2014 (10 years after the original decision) per the Civic Government (Scotland) Act 1982.

@Holledge @PhilipDoggart There is no patrol needed, there is no emotion to distance from, it’s a simple revert back to rule before Covid restrictions came in. The rules were temporarily on hold to allow the space to be used. After lockdown it should, like almost every other walk of life, have reverted.

"Only a "small number" of the city's 43 graveyards experienced issues ... the council could not afford to have officers patrolling ... it was an emotive issue and "we have to separate ourselves from that emotion". Cllr Phil Doggart @PhilipDoggart bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

@theSpurtle @Del_ivered Not sure this will be the end of the matter. Having looked again at the various 'Approval of Matters as specified in Conditions' for the original 08/03361/OUT application, despite statements from Council officials, not clear-cut & they will be further legal challenges....

@Del_ivered To be fair, the Planning consent did not permit access from St James Sq. That was always subject to subsequent approval by the Roads Authority (Edinburgh Council). There is still direct access via underground car park at the back, which will save VIPs getting wet in fine weather.

Transport & Environment Cmte vote 9:2 to keep St James Sq pedestrian only. VIPs must access via underground car park or walk like everyone else. Cllr Arthur says vehicle-free rules will deliver fantastic space for benefit of public & hotel alike. #Edinburgh #hyperlocal #news

@theSpurtle I had a HGV drive along the pavement towards me at the pigeons. Just expected me to get out the way. Remove the parking and turn it into loading bays and problem solved.

@Holledge @Edinburgh_CC As well as the archived webcast (c/w the ability to fast forward which is often welcome) - maybe they should consider an edited highlights version ?

@EllaTasm @theSpurtle Agree the former bowling greens are an under-used community asset & have been fenced off for far too long. (the foxes are OK with it though). Think the issue is the Council's (un-founded ?) concerns with land contamination hence the proposal to cover with 40 - 50cm of soil.
