𝗦𝗔𝗗𝗖 𝗷𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮 𝗶𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗼𝗺 𝗗𝗮𝘆.
The Southern African Development Community (SADC) joins the Government and people of the Republic of South Africa, a Member State of SADC since 1994, in commemorating Freedom Day today, 27 April 2026.
This day marks 32 years since South Africa’s first democratic elections in 1994, that brought to an end the apartheid regime and ushered in a constitutional democracy founded on human dignity, equality, and freedom.
A free and democratic South Africa has been central to advancing SADC’s vision of regional integration, peace, and shared prosperity under the SADC Treaty, Vision 2050, and the Regional Indicative Strategic Development Plan (RISDP) 2020-2030.
May this Freedom Day renew our shared resolve to build a stronger, more united and prosperous SADC region.

As we mark Freedom Day, we honour the significance of 1994, the sacrifices made, and the hard-won right to live in a democratic South Africa, 32 years into our democracy.
We also know that there is no freedom without dignity, and that it must be felt in people’s everyday lives.
Madiba’s words call on us to continue the work of building a society where both freedom and dignity are a reality for all.

This morning I had the pleasure to address the Zukunftstag Mittelstand, an important gathering of Germany’s family-owned enterprises and small and medium sized businesses.
South Africa’s foreign policy is shaped by a philosophy called Ubuntu the belief that progress is strongest when it is shared, and that trust grows through relationships.
Translated into business terms, this means:
· Reliability over opportunism
· Institutions over improvisation
· Partnership over extraction
South Africa is a working constitutional democracy with an independent judiciary, strong protection of contracts and offers a regulatory environment familiar to European businesses. For family-run firms, this matters because capital invested is often family capital, reputation is personal and exit strategies are rarely rushed.
South Africa enjoys a special, structured, and long-standing strategic partnership with the European Union.
This partnership provides:
· Legal and regulatory familiarity,
· Deep trade and industrial cooperation,
· And policy alignment on sustainability, labour standards and governance.

It was a pleasure to join South African and German business leaders which included German Chamber of Commerce and German African Business Association at a moment when global uncertainty makes reliable partnerships all the more important.
As global trade becomes more fragmented and uncertain, partnerships like ours become even more important. Following the successful BNC just held, I am proud to announce that South Africa and Germany share a commitment to rules-based trade, industrial innovation, climate responsibility, skills development and inclusive growth.
As we enter a new phase of economic cooperation, the priority now is implementation, investment mobilisation and industrial cooperation. We do so on the basis of an already strong foundation.
Since 2019, more than 300 South African exporters have participated in the Partnering in Business with Germany programme, strengthening their readiness to meet German market standards and deepen commercial ties.

Thank you for your visit @RonaldLamola. Our cooperation with #SouthAfrica is the closest & most wide-ranging we have on the African continent. To face the challenges of global geopolitical upheaval together, we adopted an action plan to put our partnership on a strategic footing.

Foreign Ministers Lamola and Wadephul consulted on bilateral cooperation, multilateralism and UN reform, and peace and security in the Middle East, Europe and Africa. Subsequently, the Foreign Ministers convened the plenary format of the BNC’s eight senior-official level interdepartmental working groups. The results were compiled in the German-South African Joint Action Plan, which the Foreign Ministers signed during the plenary session.
In the Joint Action Plan, the Foreign Ministers underscore that stable partnerships between middle power and democratic nations are essential in the current volatile international environment in particular. Moreover, they highlight that South African-German cooperation is founded on a shared commitment to the principles of a rules-based international order based on the Charter of the United Nations and international law, including the promotion and protection of human rights.
The Foreign Ministers emphasised their shared belief that representative democracy is the most effective form of government when it comes to ensuring citizens’ freedom, security and prosperity.
