As part of our ongoing efforts to complement the Ministry of Health Uganda in strengthening quality healthcare delivery, RHIF conducted a two-day capacity-building training of Healthcare providers on sickle cell disease in Jinja District. The training convened 58 healthcare providers (Doctors, Nurses, psychiatrist, public health dentist, clinical officers, lab technicians and technologists, ) from 14 health facilities across Jinja City and was officially graced by the District Health Officer and City Health Officer, reflecting strong government endorsement and alignment with national priorities. The training was facilitated by Dr. Phillip Kasirye and Prof. Grace Ndeezi, the sessions covered comprehensive SCD care—from pathophysiology, diagnosis, and screening to clinical management, HCPs roles, referral systems and linkage to care, use of hydroxurea and management of acute and chronic complications. Practical case studies, psychosocial support and strategies to address stigma and mental health were emphasized. The HCPs are now better equipped to apply standard treatment protocols, strengthen patient counseling, improve community linkages, and enhance continuity of care—contributing to improved outcomes for persons living with sickle cell disease. We extend our sincere gratitude to the NNHF for supporting Sickle Cell Program in Uganda 🇺🇬.

Yesterday, our team conducted a sickle cell awareness and education session and screening services at Aisha Girls Primary and Secondary School, Bombo Kalule, in Luwero District. They had an engagement focused on demystifying sickle cell disease, promoting early screening, and strengthening understanding of prevention and care among students. Through interactive discussions with students, we're addressing common myths, reducing stigma and encouraging informed health-seeking behaviors. @GazaDirectAid #SickleCellAwareness #PublicHealth #CommunityEngagement #HealthEducation #Luwero

We are pleased to announce the 5th Annual Uganda Sickle Cell Convention, scheduled for 3rd July 2026 at the Makerere University School of Public Health Auditorium. Over the past four years, this convention has grown into a powerful platform for building a community of practice, strengthening networks, sharing best practices, learning from sickle cell warriors, and advancing policy dialogue. We are excited to convene stakeholders once again to drive meaningful action in sickle cell prevention, care, and advocacy. @GlobalSCDN @GHU_Official @SabrinaKitaka @NicosamHealth @HemexHealth @Stabex_Ug @MSF_USA @MSF @FnScientific @AgiosMedical @cphluganda @ben02ng @BillGates @Microhaem @terumobct #SickleCellConvention #SickleCellUganda #PublicHealthUganda #HealthAdvocacy #EndSickleCell

Earlier today, together with representatives from Sickle Cell Alliance Uganda, we attended the launch at Serena Hotel of locally manufactured IVD test kits for malaria, HIV, and sickle cell disease by Microhaem. Congratulations to @Microhaem on this remarkable innovation.

As part of our ongoing efforts under the CONSA Project to trace and support families living with sickle cell disease and ensure continuity of care, last week, we conducted a refresher training for 34 Community Health Workers (CHWs). The training equipped CHWs with essential knowledge, tools, and resources to effectively educate, counsel, and refer sickle cell cases within their communities. This is critical in ensuring that children living with sickle cell disease receive the comprehensive care they deserve. We appreciate the Community Health Workers play a vital role in strengthening awareness, early identification, and linkage to care, making them key pillars in improving health outcomes at the grassroots level. It was an engaging and impactful session, marked by active participation and shared commitment to improving sickle cell care. We extend our sincere gratitude to Andrew Zapfel, MPH, PMP and American Society of Hematology for supporting this impactful actvity in Uganda. #SickleCellCare #CommunityHealth #CHWs #HealthForAll #UgandaHealth #CONSAProject.

On 10th March 2016, we held an initiation meeting with Jinja health officials, Ministry of Health representative, the Director of Jinja Regional Referral Hospital, the Head of the Pediatric Department Jinja Referral, and project support teams to strengthen collaboration to improve the newborn screening program under CONSA. Under the CONSA project, RHIF will support community-level interventions to trace children lost to follow-up, provide support to affected families to ensure continuity of care, and strengthen referral systems through targeted training of Community Health Workers. We also aim to increase awareness of sickle cell disease and its management, ensuring that families are well-informed and supported. By equipping Community Health Workers with the necessary tools and skills, we hope to strengthen community-based care systems so that every child receives the attention and treatment they need. We are grateful for the support of the American Society of Hematology Andrew Zapfel, MPH, PMP for this partnership, which seeks to drive meaningful impact and improve the quality of life for children living with sickle cell disease. #SickleCellAwareness #NewbornScreening #CommunityHealth #ChildHealth #HealthcareImpact. #CommunityHealth #CHWs #HealthForAll #UgandaHealth #CONSAProject.
