No doubt the difficulty level has increased. I’m not blind to that. But it can still be done. I went from having a roommate to living with my wife who also worked full time. I’ve never afforded a place myself my entire life. And I was married for 8 years before buying my house. We saved like pack rats to get a down payment. But this post was about rent and being able to afford a place by yourself. I’m simply saying that’s unreasonable when you are young and not making a lot of money yet. Roommates is the smart move. You can’t disagree with that.

rent for a one bedroom in most major cities is $1,800 landlords require you make 3x that to qualify that’s $5,400 a month $64,800 a year before taxes after taxes you need to be making close to $80,000 a year just to qualify to rent a one bedroom apartment the median salary for a 22 year old in america is $36,000 how does this make any sense?

Being able to afford your own place right out of school has always been hard and not really possible even decades ago. Having a roommate to split bills with has always been a thing and was/is the norm. Why do young people today have this idea that they are entitled to never having to make it first.

The math for a single person working full time at $20/hr in 2026: Monthly take home: $2,780 Median 1BR rent: $1,650 That leaves: $1,130 For food Transportation. Utilities. Healthcare. Clothing. Everything unexpected. The federal poverty line for a single person is $15,060/year. Two dollars more than minimum wage debates. Four digits above the poverty line. And it still doesn't work. That's not a budgeting problem. That's not a discipline problem. That's not an avocado toast problem. $20/hr used to be a living wage. Someone decided it isn't anymore. They just never said it out loud during an election year.

I wish people just posted real numbers to make their arguments.. 90k assumes a 450,000 dollar house if putting 20% down. 360k borrowed at 6% APR is a monthly payment of 2160. Add annual insurance of 3k split over 12 months and monthly payment is 2400. Add average property tax rate of .9% and monthly payment comes to 2680. Average house value is also less than 450k and is about 90k less so switching to that numbers lowers to amount borrowed 288k (20% down) and a monthly payment of 2250. Average rent price of a 3 bed single family house is 2000-2400. Renting is definitely easier in that you don’t need a down payment and it’s easy to get in and out of a property but at average costs the monthly payment is about the same. However one builds equity and the other does not.

option 1: rent a house for $2,400/month option 2: give the bank $90,000 and pretend you “own” a house for $3,800/month… knowing $2,500 of that is just interest Pick your struggle

Makes no sense. God doesn’t force you to do anything in this life. It’s all influence. You also don’t get to decide how God does things. Sorry if you don’t like it but that’s the way it is. I have a road map to salvation and eternity with God. Why would I not follow it. You do you but I would encourage you to have an open mind and read before just deciding that because you don’t like the idea of consequences you’re going to turn away forever. Nobody fully understands it all.
