This is a hard article to read, but I hope you'll do so. I've spent some time reporting on widespread rape and other sexual violence of Palestinian male and female prisoners by Israeli authorities, and the article is now published. The assault victims were warned not to give speak of what they endured -- they were sometimes told they would be killed or raped if they gave interviews -- but they found the courage to do so. One man described being raped three times in a single day in Israeli prison, the third time after he tried to protest. A young woman said the guards would come in at the beginning of each shift and strip her naked and abuse her. Another reported that she was shown photos of herself being raped and warned they would be released unless she cooperated with Israeli intelligence. Even three children who had been detained told me they had been sexually abused. Look, whatever our position on the Middle East, we should be able to agree on being anti-rape. Sexual assaults were horrific when Israeli women were targeted on Oct. 7, and they're equally horrific when Israeli authorities use them against Palestinians day after day after day. thing about the sonic youth discourse is: they formed 45 years ago. they broke up 15 years ago. if you're under 30 you don't have to have strong opinions about this band. no more new albums. no more shows. you will rarely hear them in public. they have zero impact on your life.

@staticbluebat @TheGayChingy Yeah i think he can write really well about what makes certain classic movies work, but the confidence that he can’t be missing something, he actually sees through what everyone else is fooled by is incredibly annoying.

I find reading Roger Ebert reviews of David Lynch genuinely kind of frustrating because he writes about the work as ingenuine and parodic.
Watching Roger talk on tv with Gene about Lynch is way better because it sounds like he thinks decrying some rascally film trickster or imp

@staticbluebat @TheGayChingy and iirc he doesn’t really get it as a movie, he just enjoys the experience of watching it in a way he didn’t with Blue Velvet. Which is fine as a viewer but you’d think a critic would try to engage with it critically!

Yes because choosing to root for the Yankees if you are not born into it is proof of defective character. This is less about "the gentrifier laptop class" and more about "anyone with a moral center would not willingly choose to root for the Yankees." I would personally be thrilled so many good and ethical people were moving to my city!

@roryisconfused That’s actually how I feel about Marlo Stansfield. Until Marlo, the villains in The Wire were portrayed as real people. Bad people, but real. Marlo and his crew were cartoonishly evil. Every time they were on screen, it took me out of the story I had been watching.
