@RedAsTheyCome Maybe you should read the actual report that the news story misrepresents. The Op Banner report actually says the IRA were defeated. Try reading it. You're welcome.

Someone got a bit upset with me on here today when I said the IRA were defeated. I was told that "Nobody won from the troubles." As I pointed out to that individual, defeating a terrorist group is a win and indeed the security forces in Northern Ireland were "uniquely successful", as an expert on terrorism has said. I know that the IRA being defeated by the security forces is not a fact that everyone likes, particularly supporters of the IRA. There's also the 'nobody won' idea, peddled by the type of people who probably think we should all gather around a campfire and sing kumbaya. Well, sorry folks but in this corner of social media, there won’t be any kumbaya permitted on the topic of counter-terrorism. To say otherwise is insulting to people who countered terrorism and to people who were victims of it. I'm not going to pretend that what people did to hold the line and ensure terrorism, didn't succeed, or was all for nothing, or that they had some kind of score draw with morally bankrupt terrorists. I'm not going to pretend that "nobody won" just to avoid upsetting people. If the fact that the security forces were successful and the IRA lost (yet again) upsets people, that just means I'm upsetting the right kind of people.

I seldom engage online with the IRA 'true believers' because that's about as productive as explaining algebra to a labrador. It can however be occasionally amusing when one of the pro terrorism community feel the need to tell me the IRA won / the British lost, if I simply ask them to provide supporting evidence for their claim. Obviously, Gerry Adams stating the IRA were undefeated, isn't going to be sufficient. They need to supply actual evidence rather than a propaganda narrative. Try it sometime. Let them do the work. Clearly they are going to be challenged when asked to explain how it was a victorious "army" was forced to decommission its weapons. Let us not forget the IRA's stared objective of forcing a British withdrawal, but yet their political wing in 2026 is helping to govern part of the UK. As you can see, the pro terrorism community has its work cut out.

As I and others commented this week, regardless of what happened in a London court, Gerry Adams didn't do himself any favours in the way he behaved, particularly in his dismissal of Brendan Hughes, saying he was a "disappointment". That word in a London courtroom will not have gone down well within a section of Irish Republicanism. The article is correct about grassroots Republicans not trusting Adams and that was clear from the early to mid 1980s. Indeed, such was the disillusionment / suspicion about the political direction the leadership were taking the IRA, a number of IRA terrorists along the border were discussing a split. This included the leaders of the East Tyrone Brigade who were killed in 1987 whilst attacking the RUC station at Loughgall. This in turn fuelled suspicion that they had been set up by someone senior in the IRA, who wanted rid of opponents. Despite appearances, the IRA was not united as people on the outside may have believed. This of course is the Irish Republican default setting.

@SageDespatches They objective was to get to the negotiatiating table, they achieved that through mediation and part of that mediation was decommissioning, it's not rocket science.. Also do some proper research, listen to the me. Who were front line, not kids who never lived through it.

If Gerry Adams is correct and the IRA were undefeated, someone should ask him why an undefeated IRA decommissioned their weapons. They didn't do it willingly but in a post 9/11, 'war on terrorism' environment, they didn't have a choice. They were defeated and without their former friends in the White House. The IRA leadership had been resisting arms decommissioning because it obviously undermined their undefeated narrative. An "undefeated" IRA, decommissioning weapons, required a lot of propaganda spin and decades later, they are still spinning.

@oldbencjw Nope. That frequently used line is merely a rationalisation for supporting a terrorist group, for excusing terrorism and trying to equate terrorists with those who opposed them.

I was wondering why people were posting about Martin McGuinness. Apparently he died nine years ago today. Well, here's my contribution. This is McGuinness around 1990, lying to a Dutch journalist about the IRA's use of the proxy or 'human bomb' tactic. This involved strapping a victim to the seat of a vehicle and forcing him to drive a bomb to a military checkpoint, where the bomb would be detonated by remote control. When asked by the journalist about this horrific tactic, McGuinness lied to him, by pretending he wasn't involved. It was actually McGuinness who authorised the 'human bomb' tactic. He was 'officer commanding' of the IRA's Northern Command. McGuinness also lied about leaving the IRA in 1974. Apart from being a senior member of Sinn Fein, he was also on the IRA Army Council. Sound familiar? Do you see how this works? Aa the Chief Constable of the RUC said in 1996 and others such as Tony Blair would later repeat, the leadership of the IRA and Sinn Fein were "inextricably linked". The party was controlled by the IRA Army Council.

[📰] When Liverpool searched for Jurgen Klopp's successor, it was one that took the best part of six months before Slot emerged as the preferred candidate and the enormous dossier produced on him by the club, which was said to have been around 60 pages, was indicative of how meticulous they were in their recruitment drive. It's why the idea of dispensing with Slot now and bringing in a stop-gap appointment in the manner of United with interim boss Michael Carrick is simply a non-starter. The time for judgement will come at the end of the season. [@ptgorst] liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football…

I’m so looking forward to @ArleneFosterUK amendment on the Crime and policing bill , which will prevent the normalisation and glorifying terrorism. So all of you , who think it’s fun to say “up the Ra” to people who lost loved ones to the IRA will be prosecuted and receive criminal records, similar to those who glorify the UVF etc … Thanks Dame Foster 💕

Liverpool’s anaemic title defence has to go down as one of the worst in years. To play with this lack of intensity, this lack of organisation defensively, this lack of pace is so poor and reflects badly on Arne Slot. Liverpool teams have identity. This one doesn’t.  Liverpool are such a difficult watch: good players shorn of energy and belief (Kerkez and Mamardashvili played well, Ngumoha deserves to come on earlier). Mitigating factors exist, including the failure to move earlier last summer and land Marc Guehi that proved very damaging.   A decision has to be made on Slot in the summer, but surely not now. Not while Liverpool are still in the Champions League  - although PS-G’s Kvaratskhelia, Dembele, Barcola and Doue will take some stopping by that vulnerable defence. Not while they are still in the FA Cup - although they travel to Manchester City four days before visiting PS-G. And not while they still have a chance of finishing in the top five - although their run-in involves run-ins: Everton, Manchester United and Aston Villa away. Fulham, Palace, Chelsea (six-pointer) and Brentford at home. Forbidding schedule. #LFC

There are 25,000+ students at Queen’s University. Only 5,000 voted in the Irish Language referendum. 80% of students boycotted or refused to participate in it. If anything, it is a mandate to stop dragging divisive politics into the university sphere.

The statement from claimant’s solicitors sets out events in specific detail, which dismantles the assertion this was any kind of victory for Adams. He threatened them with life-changing personal costs, aided by an extraordinarily sympathetic court, and then offered to pay his own costs to settle the case. If Adams was so confident of victory, why agree to pay his own costs running to likely well over £100k?
