@spencerpratt Communist supporters always believe that their support for the Communist will keep them from being destroyed by the Communist, but it never works that way.

@PeterDClack Indeed, the entire purpose of Climate Panic is to reduce the cost of coal for China and increase the supply of coal for China.

There is a hint of delicious irony to all this. China currently manufactures 80% of the world’s solar panels, 75–80% of all batteries, 60–65% of wind turbine parts and 55% of global crude steel. This staggering modern-day success story represents the largest, quietest transfer of industrial might and power in human history. China's manufacturing grunt is more than the next 15 countries combined—larger than the US, EU and Japan together. To power this industrial onslaught, China commissions around six state-of-the-art coal plants a month (50–80 GW a year). It operates over 1,200 coal plants totaling 1,271 GW—more than half the world’s total capacity. Its coal mining fleet is four times larger than second-place India. As a result, China’s share of global manufacturing grew from 6% to 30% since 2000. Meanwhile, America’s plunged like a lead balloon from 25% to around 12%, and Europe’s collapsed from 25% to around 14%. How? China uses abundant, reliable coal power, refuses to bind itself to net-zero, and has leadership that treats factories and steel mills as critical assets—unlike the West. In geopolitical terms, this should be a lightning rod across the decaying West. But the job on the West is just about done, and the Western green transition is now almost entirely dependent on hardware manufactured by China. This rise to dizzy heights was only made possible by using the same demonised dense fossil fuel energy that has already sent the Western world spiralling into a brackish, foul-tasting, latter-day mediaeval backwater. It should be the biggest, loudest, and most outrageous news story in the Western world—but it hardly rates a mention.

@BillAckman @NYCMayor You can’t present a winning economic argument to people who are just trying to scratch a moral poison ivy of the mind. It’s like asking a beagle to stop barking at the television. Beagles know. Billionaire bad. Tax good.

@FiftySeth @NYCMayor You’re missing the point. The purpose of the tax is to raise revenues. It is going to cause overall real estate tax revenues to decline.

The @NYCMayor Mamdani pied a terre tax (the PAT tax) will likely reduce overall tax revenues for NY and that’s before considering the capital flight it will cause. When a NYC home is burdened with an additional annual tax, the home value will decline by the capitalized value of that new tax. While the PAT tax is set at 5%, it is 5% of the assessed value of the home, which is generally substantially less than its market value. Assessed values are typically a fraction, let’s say 6%-15%, of the market value of a home and/or apartment so economically the PAT tax should be approximately 0.3%-0.75% of the market value of the home. Using a 4% cap rate, a 0.3%-0.75% PAT tax should reduce market values and annual real estate tax collections by 7.5%-18.75% assuming people believe the tax will be payable annually over the long term. The impact on current real estate values is not just on owners whose primary residence is elsewhere. As such, the value of all NYC residential real estate is going to decline. This will lead to substantially reduced assessed values and lower overall real estate tax collections. And all of the above is before considering capital flight as more wealthy NYers leave the city and the desirability of NYC residential real estate declines. Tell me why I am wrong.

I remember after the 2008 crash calling one Wall Street talking head after another and being told mortgage fraud was not a factor in the collapse. Sometimes there are industry-wide incentives for everyone to be full of shit.

@RedBirdSoaring @_everythingism @jenzhuscott @TheEconomist Yeah, because Democrats think that being associated with a notorious pedophile is bad, and worth resigning over. Republicans don't. Got a name for "the guy from Barclays Bank", by the way? It could be a teller at my local branch, for all I know.

Of course not. It is because corporate boards sniff out when they have a problem with a senior executive and then the executive is offered a chance to resign without formal disclosure, or to be replaced with public disclosure, as with Ernst Lieb of Mercedes Benz. Board members leak afterward.
