I love life now, though. Despite the bad parts, despite cesspools like Twitter making it feel hopeless, there’s a beauty to nearly everything that I didn’t appreciate back then. I have a drop-dead gorgeous girlfriend, who I adore, and before that? I was happy being by myself.

And yeah, I own the fact that I was a total manchild back then. Needed to grow up, get myself into the real world. I, in fact, needed to touch grass.

Imagine someone finding an old Reddit account and posting that I felt suicidal five years ago, and thinking it’s an own. I’m still here, I’m still fighting, and goddamn, I’m feeling the best I’ve felt in my life

Sure. Last post on this matter and perhaps my most important. All I want for you is to be honest with yourself so you can achieve a self-sustaining happiness which does not require the affirmation of anyone else; gender or otherwise. That is a recipe for misery. If trying to pass as a woman and not succeeding 100% of the time is making you miserable, maybe the desire to pass as the opposite sex is a band-aid on a much deeper form of distress which needs to be addressed. You’re young. It’s easy to mistake a mask for a cure. When I was trans and being “misgendered” it didn’t evoke a reaction in me that compelled me to want to harm myself. Did it sting? Sure. Because I realized that I was brushing up against a reality I was trying to run away from. That was painful. It wasn’t soul crushing, though. In the end, I just realized continuing to transition wasn’t worth the hassle. Being trans can only hope to be a path conducive to happiness and functioning if you are at a minimum, extremely resilient. The words or perceptions of other people should not shake you if you wish to live a life which puts you at odds with your biology. It’s a hard way to live and you’ve got to be tough as nails to make it work. Regardless of where your transition goes, I hope you are able to check in with yourself and to understand that holding yourself to an impossible standard in your valiant attempt to ease your distress can actually make your distress worse. If there is even a sliver of a chance that your desire to transition is motivated by earlier pain in your life around being male, it is best to address that pain on its own merits, for your own sanity. Transition can’t heal wounds. It runs the very real risk of just making them deeper, especially if you aren’t careful. You say you’re doing your best to heal, and I hope that is true. I know many people who used transition as a way to avoid confronting their pain. I hope this is not the case for you. I hope you have legitimate mental health professionals at your side who will show you the respect you deserve by not pandering to your intrusive thoughts. I hope you can heal to such an extent that other people referring to you as your birth sex does not cause you to spiral into insanity. You don’t deserve that kind of misery. I wish you the best, genuinely.
