Protecting children... We see in this week's Come, Follow Me reading an interesting contrast: 1. Leaders who "did that which was evil in the sight of the Lord" (see 2 Kings 21:2), participated in practices for their own benefit that hurt children. The king Manasseh, for example, "made his son pass through the fire" (2 Kings 21:6). This wickedness was done at other times of idolatry (see 2 Kings 16:3 and 2 Kings 17:17). 2. By contrast, King Josiah "did that which was right in the sight of the Lord" (2 Kings 22:2). He actively opposed this practice of child sacrifice, "that no man might make his son or his daughter to pass through the fire" (2 Kings 23:10). Josiah, a type of Jesus, pointed us to Jesus' teachings on children: - Welcoming and valuing children: "But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven." (Matthew 19:14) - Protecting them: "But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea." (Matthew 18:6) What practices happen in the world today that put the needs of adults ahead of children and cause children to suffer? I don't ask this question to condemn. I ask it to start a conversation and remind us to do all we can as adults to put the needs of children first, even if it requires great sacrifice by us adults. #comefollowme
