Tony (@_TheoMed) and I have significantly updated the file on Charnockโ€™s Hypothetical Universalism. It now appears more like a small book, with a table of contents and chapters with an expanded section of Charnockโ€™s Two-fold reconciliation view. Link in the comments.

Notice that those who want to caution us against indiscriminately telling unbelievers that God loves them never have such caution against us telling them that God hates them, when it is just as true that unbelievers can misconstrue that God hates them as that they can misconstrue that God loves them. The fact is that we should not omit speaking biblical truths because unbelievers might misunderstand; rather, we should speak all truth carefully, and so qualify our meaning, to leave them without excuse. That may be very easily done with the proclamation that โ€œGod loves you.โ€ We mean that God wishes all men well, and so wants them to repent and believe, but not that He approves of them as sinners, which is why they abide under His wrath and condemnation. Even so, if we tell them that God hates them, we only may mean that He hates them as sinners, not as His creatures. He bears no ill-will towards them, but simple holy disgust, which is consistent with His benevolent well-wishing, and so while hating them God also desires their ultimate good. ๐“๐ก๐ž ๐ฉ๐จ๐ข๐ง๐ญ: Preach the whole counsel of God, and so all truth to all men, no matter how they hear it. Just anticipate their misunderstandings and so qualify the truth that those who want to misunderstand are left without excuse.

@_jonbowlin Youโ€™re assuming infallible foreknowledge requires predetermination of the will. Thatโ€™s exactly whatโ€™s disputed. Baxterโ€™s point is that Godโ€™s infallible knowledge doesnโ€™t entail that He predetermines the will to a sinful act. Certainty doesnโ€™t itself imply causation.

@RefRetrieval How can God not predetermine it if He knows it in advance? In other words, If God knows infallibly someone will murder someone else, can God change His mind about this occurring?

โ€œGod fore-knoweth not evil Acts because he willeth them, or the futurity of them, nor because he decreeth to predetermine the will to the act in specie which is sin: But he willeth to effect that which is Good, and may so far know it.โ€ โ€”Richard Baxter, Catholick Theologie

@JamesRiver63635 @glpinkston Itโ€™s only going to continue once this book is out. Then after that we have his work on justification that will be available and his Determinationes. He was truly one of the greatest and currently underrated theologians. More Davenant for the people!

As a non-Calvinist, I think this is a poor critique, whether or not weโ€™re talking about the deterministic / Edwardsian brand of Calvinism. Leighton blatantly refuses to acknowledge the distinctions being made, and yes they absolutely do make a difference. Godโ€™s eternal decree vs. providence working in time. Means and ends. Cause and effect. One of the very few things where I agree with James White lol
Soteriology101 ๐Ÿฉธ@Soteriology101

According to Calvinism, God decrees whatsoever comes to pass which would include what everyone wants to do. So, is God restraining them from doing what He decreed them to want to do? Why not just stop decreeing them to want to do those things? ๐Ÿค” The idea of God intervening to restrain mankind from doing evil assumes libertarian freedom exists otherwise you just have God restraining Himself.

@Owenfzmv @OzMarquezz Tulip is misleading and is a 20th century acronym. On Calvinism, grace is always resisted, even by the elect, but at Godโ€™s appointed time, those whom are appointed to eternal life are infallibly brought to faith by Godโ€™s grace. Many erroneously call this irresistible grace.

@OzMarquezz This is not even Calvinism. The chart says that Godโ€™s Grace can be resisted, which is contrary to the โ€œIโ€ in โ€œTULIP,โ€ which stands for โ€œirresistible grace.โ€

If grace isnโ€™t necessary prior to faith, Lydia wouldnโ€™t have needed God to open her heart. Her conversion occurred after Christโ€™s life, death and resurrection. Acts 16:14-15. Grace is necessary, folks. It comes by hearing the Word and the Spirit of God giving you a new heart. Romans 10:17; John 3:1-8.
