@MacroMate8 No long lunch breaks? Have you ever worked in an office in Raffles Place or the CBD?

@bowtiedcrake Totally agree - because of the punitive tax this trifurcated market forces liquidity straight into commercial assets. Valuations completely detach from reality, rents spike, and independent F&B gets structurally wiped out.

This is a dividend/yield market. Market cap doesn't mean much when your index is essentially just banks and REITs. Singapore is great for dividends, but totally lacks growth stocks. Look across the causeway. Semiconductors, data centers, and the China plus 1 shift are creating massive opportunities on the the KL Bourse that the SGX just can't match.

Asia’s Four Dragons: Singapore 🇸🇬 Hong Kong 🇭🇰 Taiwan 🇹🇼 South Korea 🇰🇷 Stock market rankings: Singapore 🇸🇬 - 22nd ($718.4B) Hong Kong 🇭🇰 - 18th ($1.23T) Taiwan 🇹🇼 - 5th ($4T) South Korea 🇰🇷 - 7th (3.9T) Singapore’s weakness in its stock market size is obvious on first glance amongst the Four Dragons but I’d say it’s pretty impressive considering a population size of 6 million Higher. Much higher.

One obvious sign someone grew up poor is that they enjoy all kinds of peasant food. I love kebabs, McDonald's double cheeseburgers, canned white sausages, Pizza Hut. In fact, I prefer a pizza hut hawai over any authentic napoli pizza. And I prefer fast food over 3 star Michelin. That being said, I've been to fine dining more often in the past few years, and I'm kinda acquiring the taste. I think in a few more years I will prefer snob food over peasant food.

What’s a sign someone grew up without much money, without them ever saying it directly? Not looking for stereotypes or jokes just habits or behaviors that make you think, “They probably didn’t have a lot growing up.”

@teo_kai_xiang In order to crank out 11 kids by the 1960’s you’re going to predate the birth control pill. Do we really think this is what they wanted?

I find this take so infuriating, in capturing the boomer worldview by going well, I didn't need space or privacy, so why do other people? Also, this is what we get when our discourse is so birthrate-centric: people start arguing that you don't need privacy to make more babies.

@Xeer @0x_ZHUANG @NotSoEasyMoney I mean if you don’t live here (and those of us who do, know) there’s no point in buying sg real estate. We only get limited tax free gains to the US on primary residence sale. So speculating on real estate is not as lucrative as an individual despite not having to pay absd.

I drove 40 mins to a government office yesterday morning. I was wearing a sleeveless top and my husband had to wait outside because of his shorts. Here's what happened, and why @JPJ_Malaysia quietly became one of the best government systems I've used. 2 things on the agenda: 1. renew my physical driver's license 2. figure out if my husband's can convert his foreign license to a Malaysian One went buttery smooth. the other sent us on a wild goose chase. Quick lore: Malaysia went fully digital in Feb 2023 and basically stopped issuing physical cards to kill queues. The only way to get a physical one? Prove you were flying somewhere that doesn’t accept digital licenses. Problem: you needed a confirmed flight ticket first. So @JPJ_Malaysia quietly scrapped that rule in Jan 2026. Now anyone can walk into any JPJ or UTC counter nationwide and just ask for a physical card. No questions asked. Perfect timing as I was due for renewal anyway. Pro tip before you go to any Malaysian gov office: Wear long pants Y sleeved top. I showed up in yoga pants and a sleeveless top. Husband in shorts. He had to wait outside in the heat while I borrowed his rain jacket 😂 The actual experience (JPJ HQ Johor, 40 mins from @ns): • Arrived ~10:30am • Scanned QR via JPJeQ app (it forces location check-in so you can’t cheat the queue) • Number 75, 40-min estimated wait • Sat outside with husband • Exactly 38 mins later, got called in • Scanned IC, paid RM290 (RM270 for 10-year renewal + RM20 physical card) • No new photo needed as they use your IC photo • Sat back down. texted my husband to say I was done and just waiting. • Just as I finished sending the text, my name was called. Whole counter process: 5–8 minutes👏👏👏 On my husband's license situation: he cannot convert his foreign license directly to a Malaysian one. That's apparently a perk exclusive to @mymm2h holders. everyone else has to redo the full driving test from scratch. I think this is probably the 3rd time he has to redo his license just from moving countries! We got bounced from the driving school ("go to JPJ") to JPJ ("go back to the driving school") before getting a straight answer. but hey, that's Malaysia for you🤷‍♀️ For context on how good this actually is: • If I'd gone to a KL office at the same time, I'd probably have been served in the afternoon. • If I'd gone to Kuching, maybe 15 minutes. small town privilege. My husband pointed out that in parts of Europe, you can't even renew your license out of your home state 🤯 Here I walked into any JPJ office, no forms, no appointment, and walked out in under an hour. If you’re based at @ns or anywhere in Johor → go to JPJ HQ Johor. Skip KL queues entirely. (UTC counters in KL also work the same way.) How has your license renewal experience been - in Malaysia or anywhere else? Drop your pain (or wins) below 👇
