The reports of César Chávez’s sexual abuse are horrific and disturbing. The courage it took for the victims to come forward is a testament to their strength, and my heart breaks for the women who were abused, especially at such a young age. The farmworker movement was built thanks to the work of many, and it belongs to more than one individual. While the labor community is processing this tragic revelation, we must remain committed to defending civil rights and uplifting the farmworkers across America who contribute so much to our country.

We’ve heard horrific stories about what can go wrong when people think AI chatbots are doctors, lawyers or financial advisors, and no family should have to worry that a chatbot claiming to be a therapist might lead their child into harm’s way. The Republicans have no excuse to keep their government shutdown going while withholding paychecks from hardworking employees at TSA, FEMA and the Coast Guard. This week I toured San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center, where I spoke with doctors, nurses and administrators about the lifesaving work they do for our community every day. This public safety net hospital serves over 100,000 patients and is the birthplace of nearly 1,400 babies each year. It provides primary care, mental health services, research on cutting edge medical advancements, and is one of the very few trauma centers in the region. People’s lives are shaped every day here – and that’s why it’s been so devastating to see how the Trump Administration’s disastrous health care cuts will have real-world impacts here at home. With Republicans stripping away health insurance from millions of Americans, it puts downward pressure on emergency rooms that will ultimately cost more money and more lives. As a member of @EnergyCommerce, I am committed to restoring access to health insurance for those who need it most, and I am tremendously grateful to @ZSFGCare @UCSFHospitals employees and health care workers across the country for all you do in your communities.

Yesterday I voted YES on the War Powers Resolution which would have asserted that Congress, not the President, has the Constitutional authority in declaring war. We need to keep up the pressure and ensure the President is accountable to the American people who do not want the US engaged in endless foreign wars, like this reckless war in Iran.

Kristi Noem was the most corrupt, unqualified and cruel official to serve in this role, and I have been calling for her to be fired for months. Under her watch, we’ve seen Americans killed on the streets, ICE invading schools, and totally inhumane violence that she is unable to even answer basic questions about. My heart goes out to our brave U.S. military members who have lost their lives or been gravely wounded during the latest conflict in Iran. The people of Iran have suffered for decades under an oppressive and deadly regime with a record of state-sponsored terror. However, Trump’s reckless actions have further destabilized the Middle East and innocent civilians on the ground are already being killed in significant numbers. Trump’s suggestion that the U.S. could be engaged in an open-ended “forever” war is not what Americans want. Trump has acted illegally while providing no path forward to bring stability to the Middle East. The Constitution gives Congress the sole power to declare war, and I firmly support reasserting this authority through a war powers resolution so that we can serve as a check on this president.
