Kudos to @AirFranceKLM. They destroyed my wife’s suitcase (stuff happens), so we trudged to the service desk. I was hoping for some duct tape and expected to fill out a form where, maybe, they’d send me twenty bucks in six weeks or so. Nope! The friendly and efficient clerk apologized for the damage, measured our suitcase, went into the back room, and returned with a brand-new suitcase, the same size, still in the shrink wrap. We swapped the contents right there and rolled out of baggage claim with the new suitcase. Nicely done. That’s the sort of service I’d expect from Singapore Air, not a European carrier. (By the way, what happened to @SamsoniteUSA? Apparently they’re no longer gorilla-proof…)

🚨 Sean Strickland ABSOLUTELY GOES OFF on Muslim UFC fighters, the Muslim community, Khamzat Chimaev, Nassourdine Imavov and brings up the 2015 Charlie Hebdo shooting 😬 “Are there any Christians in the room? I can make fun of Christ all day and you guys will say ‘well, you’re going to hell but good luck.’” “It made me laugh because he [Nassourdine Imavov] said something like ‘olly olly akhbar’ to a tweet I did, and I said bro remember Charlie Hebdo? Remember when you f**king pieces of sh*t murdered that guy in France? Did you post about him? Did you condemn that?” “At the end of the day, these guys, even Khamzat Chimaev says ‘my Muslim community’ dude, if that’s your Muslim community that you have to go m*rder somebody for freedom of speech, you have a serious f**king problem.” “That is why the UFC, bringing these f**kers in. You’re making the sport unwatchable because you’re bringing these people in that are not compatible with America, the Americans don’t give a f**k about them, they can NEVER BE American.” “It’s one of those sh*tty things where the UFC will keep doing it.” via UFC 328 media day

@zoolooy @zei_squirrel The Soviet Union signed a treaty with Nazi Germany, then sent hundreds of tons of goods to them that allowed the Nazis to rebuild their army, and then acted surprised when eventually the Nazis turned on them.

I would assume this is Lyon and not Paris. That’s Poularde de Bresse en vessie. Extremely high quality chicken steamed in a pig’s bladder with truffles and foie gras. This was made famous by Paul Bocuse and is amazing. $400 or so for a serving for 2-4 people, for those who are asking in the comments.

My healthcare is free through my employer. The difference between the two countries is you can rise in the United States and become wealthy. The average top 20% salary is now above $150,000 yearly and surging. Even regular jobs like electricians and plumbers make $50 an hour or more plus overtime.

If the UK joined the US as the 51st state. We would be the poorest state in the entire union. Mississippi which is portrayed at swamp dwelling hillbillies in majority of international media is above us. I don’t think people grasp how far we’ve fallen in real terms when it comes to GDP per capita. We’ve seen no growth for almost an entire generations. We’ve seen our productivity decrease and our tax increases. The average person on the UK, on £50,000 is less well off than your average Mississippi swamp dweller.

@UtSnowBird @EnergyMix_UK @DominicMcGregor 800 usd just for insurance? That's an insane amount. Especially considering the significant amount of money Americans are expected to pay out of their own pocket, even when insured.

Crap comparison. You cannot just count Healthcare 'cost' without taking into all numbers. Most people in the UK pay for the healthcare via taxes. US Residents pay less. Currently I pay 800 a month for my healthcare costs - Married with 4 kids. three scenarios all using equalized numbers: 700k USD Income - in the US I would have 461k including medical costs - and this is with basically no real deductions which anyone making this level would have, probably moving income much higher. In the UK you would have 453k 200k USD Income - US - 144k Take home after Medical - in the UK 121k Take home 50k USD Income - Most likely 45k take Home - UK 40k Take Home These do not take into account that many in the US would have Health Insurance from employer further reducing their cost. And then last, in the US the average pay difference from what I can find is 16% more than UK residents- meaning my comparisons are different since the US resident would be making even more.

Of course one has to understand nationalism - and liberalism, völkisch thought, socialism, etc - to understand Zionism, as it's a 19th century European-Enlightenment ideology influenced by these things. However, at a fundamental level, it's completely sui generis. Nobody has ever claimed the right to establish a state somewhere because one's ancestors were there 2,000 years ago.
Arash Azizi آرش عزیزی@arash_tehran

Any serious critique of Zionism and Israel would place them alongside other nationalisms and view them from that lens. But ofc that would require actual study of things

@MyronGainesX @IDF No a single jewish communist was "murdered." Not a single jew that died of typhus was "murdered." The former got no less than they deserved, and the latter died only incidentally. The number of "murdered" jews must be vanishingly small.

Five things I've found almost no Europeans know (and lots of Americans don't either) that warps the view of America vs. Europe: - The distance from NYC to LA is as great as the distance from Moscow to Lisbon; - If you measure across all of Europe (excluding Russia, which would make the comparison worse for Europe), not just within each country, income inequality is greater than in the US, even though Europe is geographically smaller; - The overwhelming majority of Americans have much greater access to insured quality healthcare than the median European; - Disposable household income in the poorest US state, Mississippi, is higher than in any country in Europe that is as large or larger than Rhode Island; - How federalism works in the U.S. Ignorance on these 5 simple issues alone explains much of how people (incorrectly) view life in the U.S. vs. life in Europe.

Not so long ago, I would have applauded this idea. Especially after Americas treatment of Ukraine. But today, this idea makes me chuckle wryly. I’ve been working as an assistant to an MEP for about a year now. I’ve been able to see the inner workings of the EU. I’m sorry to say, but I cannot see a “European army” forming at all. If it did, they would do nothing but militarily exercises—if they even get that far. They would never agree to act on the world stage. In fact, most European countries would rather have “diplomatic relations” with bad actor, even if it’s harmful. Even if those actors stand against everything they claim to uphold. Most of Europe’s leaders are like Chamberlain. They all want to wave flimsy agreements and call it peace. Without the US, Europe is lost. It’s a difficult pill to swallow. But it’s true. There is no denying that without Europe, America will have a difficult time projecting power across the globe. But the US is absurdly powerful—even then.
New Direction AFRICA@Its_ereko

🚨🇪🇸 BREAKING: Spain's PM Pedro Sánchez just called for a common European army. Not in 10 years. Not in 2 years. Now. As soon as tomorrow. NATO is cracking. The US is pulling away. Europe is waking up to the fact that its security blanket is gone. A European army means no more waiting for Washington's permission. No more begging for US troops. No more wondering if Trump will answer the phone. The world just got more complicated. The US just got more isolated. And Europe just took its first real step toward strategic independence. This is not a headline. This is a turning point.

When this is over, the western part of NATO will never be the same. Spain, England, France and Italy have sold us out, as they too often have a history of doing. Eastern European nations are the heart of NATO. They spend money on defense, know how to fight and love the US. France particularly deserves fault and blame. From supporting China and Russia at the UN to denying Americans overflight rights, they’re doing what they’ve always done - showing weakness, while cutting deals with terrorists. (The reason the US has a Marine Corps and Navy is unlike France, we refused to pay a ransom to the Barbary Pirates. France is always happy to cut a deal.) Wars have unintended consequences as nations show their true colors. NATO will never be the same, and Western European weakness and acquiescence is the cause.
