This kind of rhetoric was good in the 1980s when America was going through a consumer product boom, but it’s not going to meet the current moment. The Left’s easy counter is, “Sure, you can buy a cheap fridge, but you can’t afford housing, education, and healthcare.” We’re not going to get the DSA generation to change their minds with an appeal to consumerism and recycled arguments from “I, Pencil.” Sadly, we’re way beyond that point.

In general, the problem with all the recent talk of “viewpoint diversity” as the cure for the monoculture of the university is this: (1) everyone thinks that there must be some limits of professional competence to viewpoint diversity (no flat-earth types in the geography department please); (2) academic progressives overwhelmingly hold that views like “men cannot get pregnant” are as inadmissible as believing in a flat earth. Hence they are ultimately unable to reform themselves, at least at the department level. There must be thorough reconstruction from above or from outside.

It is one of my missions in life to get people to understand that the senior service colleges do not teach people marksmanship or hand-to-hand combat. Serving in uniform does not teach you about alliance management or the policy process, among many other things that they teach.
