@SouthwestAir lined up to board 2290 in OAK and then we hear there are no pilots here. Trying to stay loyal even as you lose your soul with all the changes this year, but how does this even happen in the modern era?

@greg_shill @TheAtlantic I have opened many presentations with a note that speed, drinking, and seat belts are the three most common factors and all 3 can be addressed through vehicle design.

In @TheAtlantic today, I argue the safe streets movement has taken an odd turn. Under the banner Vision Zero, not only is there just 1 acceptable solution—costly road redesign—but reformers now dismiss the importance of enforcement. Expedient, but deadly. theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/…
The Atlantic@TheAtlantic

Road-safety activists claim that fewer police and better-designed streets will make driving less deadly, writes @greg_shill. But they should redirect some energy away from the design-industrial complex and “toward targeting the deadliest behaviors”: theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/…

It was great to be part of this @NOCoEOps peer exchange! There are so many resources to create better bike lanes and I appreciated the opportunity to share the @BikeLeague perspective on them Hoping the new @aashtospeaks Bike Guide comes out before Christmas

@BrentToderian I’m still here but rethinking. Problem is I don’t want to go to 3-4 other apps as backup. Just harder to sift through here to find value.

I’ve been saying I won’t leave here as long as the audience I NEED to reach — for my mission of better, more sustainable cities that I consider my work to be — is still here. But I often wonder if it still is? I have 154K followers, but are you REALLY still here? Do you see me?

@the_UrbanWolf @EngineerDustin Ocean at Calif Incline. Santa Monica previously had a protected intersection corner here. It was changed to this design after awhile, I heard due to RT conflicts with bikes.

@EngineerDustin The right turn lane needs to angle and have a yield marking. That design is inferior to the one pictured below, which specifically guides the car in angle and where to yield. Even in the diagram above, the driver has yielded inside the bike lane incorrectly.

Ok bike nerds, who has guidance for these "20 ft" bike lane tapers that get installed before the mixing zone of dedicated right turn lanes?

@Bike_DE @Kenmcld @Boenau @BethOsborneT4A @clmarohn @schlthss You might be able to reach near consensus about lowering commercial arterials, typical 4-lane stroads, to 35, but research and lack of knowledge of research will increase resistance to lower speeds at this time. (My assessment of the current state).

@Boenau Your nonsensical rant is such a disrespect to the suffering of allergy patients and the hard work of immunology researchers. Just for the sake of your quixotic war against cars?

@StrongTowns If the road is really wide and the buildings are very far apart, it's extremely hard to get vehicle speeds down low enough to where collisions with pedestrians aren't fatal. (Data from Patricia Tice.)

Here are a few design elements that encourage slower speeds: - Narrower lanes. - Bollards. - Curb extensions. - Raised crosswalks.
