Today, the report received from the Forensic and Health Laboratory, Jabalpur, has confirmed the presence of “Canine Distemper Virus” (CDV) in the tigress Amahi (female) and her 4 cubs. This deadly disease spreads to tigers and other carnivores through dogs. The virus directly attacks the nervous system and respiratory system, ultimately causing a slow and painful death. The last reported case was in a leopard from Dewas, Madhya Pradesh. That leopard was later treated at Indore Zoo. By forcing the chase onto uneven, rocky ground and through water, the deer exploits the tiger’s biomechanical limits. Navigating unstable stones increases energy expenditure and injury risk for the heavy feline.
