None of these heavyweights can hold a ladle, not even a teaspoon, to the luminous glory of Luchi with Shada Aloor Torkari or the transcendent Koraishutir Kochuri with Cholar Daal. None. Zip. Zero. My Bengali soul is personally offended on behalf of every mother who ever rolled out dough at 7 in the morning. Misal Pav? It’s a fiery, sprout-laden explosion from Maharashtra—spicy, tangy, pav soaked in that usal gravy like it’s trying to wake the dead. Fine for a chaotic Sunday brunch when you want your sinuses cleared or have stocked up on too many bottles of Aqua Ptychotis. Paratha? Fine but which paratha? The thick North Indian stuffed paratha that sits in your belly like a warm brick? Or the flaky, buttery, layered lachcha version that’s basically edible architecture? They can all be delicious, sure, but this is a vague entry. Almost like an all-encompassing tick mark in the India box. Chole Bhature? Those deep-fried maida balloons that puff up like edible clouds paired with chickpeas swimming in an indigestible masala is perhaps the best of the three entries. They’re crowd-pleasers, loud, bold, Instagram-ready. They shout. They conquer. They dominate the plate. But Bengali breakfast? It doesn’t need to shout. It whispers. It seduces. It wraps around your soul like a soft gamchha on a winter morning. Take Luchi with Shada Aloor Torkari. Maida dough rolled whisper-thin, dropped into hot oil, and blooming into a perfect, golden orb of puff. Crisp on the outside, feather-light and hollow inside, so delicate it almost feels like it might float away if you don’t pin it down with your fingers. Visited the much-hyped @RameshwaramCafe in Mumbai. They recommended Aamras, which I ordered only to regret it later. When it arrived the fragrance of Hapus was missing, in Mumbai restaurants, we are always served Alphonso Aamras, but this was not Hapus Aam, and the staff couldn’t even tell me which mango they used. The taste was bad and I told the staff too when they asked for review. Though their Bisibele Bhath was decent, I still prefer Ramashray. Even the filter coffee, I think Matunga serves better.

Same time last year, after so many years of wanting to go, I finally visited the Ellora Caves. It’s honestly a shame that despite living in Pune for almost 10 years, I made it there only last year and I was absolutely stunned. In the past year, I’ve probably told every friend and colleague I’ve met that if there’s one place in India you must visit, it has to be the Kailasa Temple. I still can’t believe it isn’t listed among the wonders of the world. Having travelled to over 30 countries and seen countless monuments, nothing has ever blown me away like Ellora did. To think that the entire Kailasa Temple was carved out of a single rock is mind-bending. The details, the carvings of the scenes from the Ramayana, everything feels majestic. Trust me, if you’re looking for a short getaway in the next two months from Pune/Mumbai, this is the time to plan your Ellora trip. I had clubbed it with Trimbakeshwar, Grishneshwar, and Ajanta and can share a short itinerary if anyone’s interested (did a road trip from Pune).
