Happy Birthday America! 250 years ago, some brave risk takers "Thought Different" and proposed a radical new political philosophy whereby the government derives it's power from the consent of the governed rather than the other way around and that all people are created equal. As you might imagine, this new "Idea" didn't sit well with some folks who preferred that these colonies in the New World stick with the status quo. Don't rock the boat. A Canadian friend once commented that America was born in "Fire and Blood" and indeed those revolutionaries fought and died for more than eight years in places like Concord, Lexington, Boston, Bunker Hill, New York City, Valley Forge, Saratoga, and of course Yorktown with help from our friends in France. All this for an "Idea." George Washington would then commit a revolutionary act when he refused to be named "King" and instead took on the more temporary role of "President." In this "Grand Experiment," the early Americans didn't get everything right in the "Equality" department. Ultimately hundreds of thousands would fight and die to free the slaves in places like Bull Run, Antietam, Vicksburg, and Gettysburg to right that wrong. This idea of "America" is an ongoing work in progress striving to live up to the ideals written in the Declaration of Independence. We stumble. We fall. We get back up and strive to do better. A Swedish friend of mine remarked that despite being comprised of people from all over the world, Americans must surely have a different DNA makeup that makes them innovators and risk takers. From taking flight at Kitty Hawk, electricity from a kite, light bulbs in Menlo Park, creating assembly lines in Highland Park, landing spacecraft on the moon, and Macintosh computers in Cupertino, I can't help but wonder about the DNA thing. This "Idea" and "Grand Experiment" all Americans take part in must be nourished and protected if we want to remain a beacon of freedom. Whether it's Paul Revere and the Minutemen, GIs landing at Omaha Beach, or Trident Submariners beneath the waves, America is the land of the free because of the brave. I love America. I am America.
