Viktor Orbán has been a very consequential PM - probably the most consequential Hungary has ever had. The economy has strengthened, the city of Budapest has been transformed, and Hungary’s family policies and determination to keep its culture have been studied around the world. He and I differed on Ukraine but I thought he was dead right to defy the EU, on illegal immigration especially. Why should a sovereign nation be bullied by Brussels into policies that would jeopardise its future as a distinct people? Under Orbán, Budapest became something of a haven for conservative intellectuals. This has been a significant point of soft power for Hungary and I don’t expect the new government will want that to change.

Since I have been elected I have been raising this issue and targeting the tax structure around ETF’s is the first step. With Irish savings deposits growing rapidly the Irish public deserve better investment vehicles to maximise returns.

Irish investors are being punished for doing the right thing. Invest in a simple ETF? The State slaps you with 38% tax after 8 years on gains you haven’t even realised. Tax on money you never received. It has to change.

A good new EU regulation would be to make it illegal to make claims like saying EU rules make a product more expensive in one member state than in another without backing it up with references to specific rules.

The decision followed his refusal to comply with the IOC’s Guidelines on Athlete Expression. It was taken by the jury of the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (IBSF) based on the fact that the helmet he intended to wear was not compliant with the rules. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has therefore decided with regret to withdraw his accreditation for the Milano Cortina 2026 Games. Despite multiple exchanges and in-person meetings between the IOC and Mr Heraskevych, the last one this morning with IOC President Kirsty Coventry, he did not consider any form of compromise. The IOC was very keen for Mr Heraskevych to compete. This is why the IOC sat down with him to look for the most respectful way to address his desire to remember his fellow athletes who have lost their lives following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The essence of this case is not about the message, it is about where he wanted to express it.

Yesterday in Davos, President @ZelenskyyUa crossed a line. There is nothing new in the fact that, as elections approach in Hungary, he once again placed the Hungarian government, and me personally, in his sights. What was surprising, however, was that in his speech he also criticised every other European leader. He says the support sent to Ukraine is insufficient, the weapons are insufficient, and Europe’s determination is insufficient. We did not have to wait long for the response from Brussels. Last night, @vonderleyen presented a roadmap for Ukraine’s development. In it, the Brusselians accepted every Ukrainian demand. $800 billion for Ukraine, accelerated EU accession by 2027, and further support all the way until 2040. This is where things stand. President Zelenskyy has things all backwards, yet the Brusselians are eager to pay up. We will have a few words to say about this as well. A national petition is coming, through which we can send a clear message to Brussels: we will not pay!
