@rorysutherland i'd argue evaporative misting beats fans in dry heat because physics, not preference. the temperature drop is measurable and instant, which is why it's infrastructure in arizona now, not a trend.

@AndrewHarnwell @rorysutherland At most supermarkets, the queues for self-check are longer than for the serviced tills. As long as both are available, it really isn't worth getting steamed up about.

Interestingly, almost every consulting firm presentation I attended for ten years stated that "80% of consumers [say they] will pay more for sustainable products". I used to sit at the back as a lonely marketer thinking "that's bollocks". But the consulting firms made money implementing all this woke shit, so it paid them to continue reciting this dumb litany.

@rorysutherland Ibstock brick launched a carbon neutral brick factory, they felt they would be able to demand a 20% premium on the products. Guess what the customer didn’t agree and they had to drop the prices to the standard rates

The problem in France is that when there is a heatwave, about 30,000 people die. That's almost three Agincourts (to use the universally accepted metric for dead French people).
Porkchop Express@Porkchop_EXP

The weirdest thing about the “europoor no AC” discourse is that there is AC everywhere in Southern and Eastern Europe so this is obviously not a financial issue. It is an ideological issue in Northwestern Europe, which is admittedly even funnier.

@rorysutherland It’s also impossible to disagree with these things within said consultancies. As a young graduate a Partner (who had a riverside house in Putney) was telling us all how we millennials don’t want to own homes, we want flexibility to rent. We all (dishonestly) nodded in agreement.

@AndrewHarnwell @rorysutherland Gotta love a survey! I used to work for a retail bank and they proudly proclaimed that the oldest user of their app was 100 years old, therefore there was nothing stopping older customers signing up. Missed the point that it was the grandson using the app on the customer behalf.

@mmt_lvt @WarGit That was a classic coordination problem. Everyone decided to change the ethnic composition of their ads all the time and all at once.

@rorysutherland @WarGit Another woke dogma needs looking at again: "White people don't mind if ads are full of non-white people" With Reform UK and Restore Britain polling at the levels they are, I think we need to question this assumption (I doubt it was ever true)

@gaslighter @SimpGanassi I get your point but an extra year of life is still nice. Also Aircon can work backwards so it keeps you warm in winter.

@rorysutherland French person here, there is a large portion of the population that believes in de-growth and that A/C makes the streets hotter; so no one wants to be stigmatised as having aircon. (Installed it for my parents because idgaf)

@LouisOrigny I installed it for my Dad. Hugely improved the last few years of his life. He also used it to heat the house so it was a heat pump too.

@rorysutherland It’s remarkable how many UK consulting & branding companies find that their research produces results that align closely with the political, cultural & social views that predominate in the ‘cool’ parts of London where their staff live.

I was once at Dublin airport and noticed someone struggling with the screen on the self-tagging machine at check-in. I won't name him, but he held a Nobel Prize in Economics. BA rolled back on this daft idea at LHR. At some point, when you arrive at an airport, you want a human being to say "Right, you're good to go."
Tom Goodwin@tomfgoodwin

Whoever decided self check-in and bag tagging for biz class was a good idea should be shot. Employing huge swathes of staff to train customers how to do their jobs is inexcusable in the hospitality industry. Management consultant thinking is poison

@rorysutherland I once talked to a Waitrose manager who claimed to have a survey showing that customers wanted the recently-installed self-service checkouts. I pointed out that literally everyone was queueing for the [wo]manned checkouts, but it did not sway him. He believed his own bullshit.

@harshacoach The marketplace is the only place where you get reliable signals. All these other proxies are artificial - but also homogenous, which is almost worse.

@rorysutherland Brilliant piece. It's related to Dan Davies talking about how the need to service high levels of debt swamps all other signals. Here the creditors' agents are creating new, wrong signals, which distract from customer reality
