The Yoshi's Island map screen theme is remarkably similar to the song "Anywhere Is" by Irish singer Enya. Both of these were composed around 1994 and released in 1995, meaning that neither of them could have been influenced by each other and this is an astounding coincidence.

I've been trying to promote wider use of the word "quixotic" but I'm learning it's a futile endeavor.

@MichaelFKane I think something like this must be true at the family and individual level, too But that's also hard to grapple with

This is fundamentally true in ways that are hard to grapple with. A nation must have a notion of why it exists and a purpose that validates the authority it wields. And the form this belief take varies by country. The Divine Right of Kings becomes the Manifest Destiny of the United States. Teleologically they are nearly the same thing.
Carlos That Notices Things@QuetzalPhoenix

Monthly reminder: Any nation or peoples that are unwilling to say "God Himself wants me and my people to have this land and to pass it down to my descendents" will not have a country or descendents for very long

It’s not cake because we don’t generally call things leavened with yeast “cake”. The bread for that stuff does have a decent bit of sugar but most people wouldn’t consider it a sweet bread (not to be confused with sweetbreads). I think it’s too sweet to eat with anything savoury, personally, though. But it’s not really tasty enough to be a good dessert bread, either. I also learned recently that many other Americans do not consider our peanut butter to be sweet even though it is sweetened so 2 out of 3 elements would not be considered “sweet” to a lot of Americans, which would make it a rather disappointing dessert to many. This would be more of a snack food. I just get offended that it’s missing the crust, though. I like bread crusts.

How is this not desert/cake?

@MichaelFKane I think the most good that can come from it is illustrating how dramatically different and viscerally people can react to a question based on framing and relating that to the VA amendment

Yup. Deleted my commentary on the red/blue button thing because it attracted the most aggressively annoying crowd overnight and I simply do not care about trolly problems enough to deal with it.

Everyone in the world has to take a vote by pressing a red or blue button. If you press the red button, then you're in the half that Bilbo doesn't know half as well as he should like. If you press the blue button, then you're in the half he likes half as well as you deserve.

I'm not a metal head, not by a long shot. I tend to go the opposite way and like folk music a lot more, but on rare occasion someone will post a DragonForce video and remind me that power metal exists and by golly, those guys just seem like they're having so much fun lol.

@CitizenAmedia I've reframed AI chats (e.g. "help me give constructive feedback to a friend") specifically because of the sycophant issue

Sean W. Malone | That’s just, like, your opinion.
This is unironically how I want all my other AIs to treat me. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, etc., all act like weird sycophantic servants who massage their answers to placate my ego or avoid saying anything some San Francisco Reddit or would find "offensive". As a result, they lie or mislead people - particularly on sensitive subjects - and can often act like a confirmation bias machine.

This is the stupidest thing I have ever seen. Michigan, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Illinois, Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, Missouri, Iowa, Arkansas, Kentucky, and Tennessee all have deep water access to the sea through the Mississippi river system, while Kansas has shallow-water access that flat barges can travel. The Mississippi River System is the single biggest deep-water watershed in the world, with more miles of interconnected navigable internal waterways than the rest of the world combined. The only reason we don't use it more is the Jones Act (also known as the "America hobbles its whole economy and international strategic standing for the benefit of a few shipwrights" law).
