Profile started 12/7/23. Not all students in the UK support the #MAB. Those students need a voice. Plz share, follow, and retweet.

@SAgStrikes2023 @ucu More than what we're getting.
Our CEO (he chose to be that, we'd rather an actual principal) earns over £250k... The 7th highest in the country, whilst his staff earn the least.
We've had course managers leave to stack shelves at Lidl because the pay is better...

🚨COLLEGE FINANCES EXPOSED 🚨
Income is up. Debt is down. But staff aren't getting their fair share.

@ucu Probably best to focus on the chaos for graduating students currently to be honest.
English

Great to see so many university staff sign this letter.
As a union we support action for a just transition from fossil fuels to climate jobs in the UK, and support reparations for those in the global South experiencing the deepening climate catastrophe.

@ldaviesmusic @1suehm @Kittymeg @ucu @halfon4harlowMP We are only concerned about this industrial action, and won't conflate to talk about other disputes.
English

If you respect university staff, you respect their right to decent working conditions.
And you respect their right to fight for them.
It's that simple.
#ucuRISING
English

@ldaviesmusic @ucu Broadly, students were supportive of all Industrial action *until* the #MAB commenced. This account was created to try to give a semblance of balance, especially when the @UCU make proclamations of *students* supporting them. Like we are a blob.
English

@ucu @vicderbyshire How about "we would welcome a constructive, public 1-2-1 with the @UCEA1 where we could discuss outstanding issues in the spirit of attempting to find a resolution"?
Not sure "really be pinned down" is going to foster engagement.
English

What we really need now is a UCU 1-2-1 with the employer on a show like @vicderbyshire where they can really be pinned down and held to account.

"Can you imagine any other place in which a customer would pay that much money and be treated this badly?" @ucu leftfootforward.org/2023/08/univer…
English

@anna_translata @ucu Your jobs *literally* would not exist without students paying tuition fees, which pay your salaries. You absolutely do have a duty to serve students. Particularly as students are not the ones treating you badly and have in the main always supported their lecturers!
English

@SAgStrikes2023 @ucu It's absolutely horrifying, yes. But if you claim you respect university staff, then you have to accept that we are not somehow bound to serve students no matter how we are treated. This action is a last resort, which university managements have had a long time to prevent.
English

@WrightNever @ucu Exactly, which is why we have tuition fees.
English

@anna_translata @ucu I think what people are aghast at is the disproportionate impact the #MAB is having on students, not that industrial action has any impact. Missing a few lectures is one thing, not being able to graduate is cruel and unforgiveable.
English

@ucu Yes. And respecting the people is not the same as only respecting the work they do or their skills, but believing that they should not have the right to advocate for better working conditions and pay, or that they can only do so if it causes no disruption to others.
English

@sparkaymark62 @BBCNewsnight @ucu @UCEA1 If it is superficial then how is this argument made with any certainty? And is the implication that Universities should sell buildings to fund a pay rise?
English

@SAgStrikes2023 @BBCNewsnight @ucu @UCEA1 Argument is universities have invested in bricks not people (staff spend historically low) & savings can be found by reprioritising people in equation. Similarly many hold 'cash at bank' & large reserves. This info available via HESA but quite superficial. Hence open the books.
English

The ongoing dispute over staff pay is a big factor affecting students’ learning experience.
General Secretary of the UCU, Jo Grady says that employers can afford to put up salaries and suggests that they are not negotiating fairly.
#Newsnight | bbc.in/2Ps915G
English

@ucu The reason Universities charge so much for International Students, which is a disgrace, is because UK students underpay. So perhaps UK students should be paying more?
English

@BBCNewsnight The #MAB is a failed strategy, that is going no where, and leaving over 10000 students in dire straits. Time to ditch it and try something else.
English

@ucu We need a deep reform of HE. Seizing all the assets of the Universities would be a good start before full nationalisation. Then let’s reform our institutions including punitive measures against all of the executives not fulfilling their contracts and acting improperly.
English

We want people to thrive.
The employers have chosen to allow this damage to unfold.
Despite having the money to pay staff properly, employers prefer to crush their staff, ruin students graduations and damage the reputation of UK higher education.
#ucuRISING
English

@ucu The UCU knows that there is no way an institution would "open its books" like this. Why should they? Also, I thought the UCU *knew* that there was a multi-billion pound surplus in the sector?
English

Watch this vice-chancellor claim we "embraced" UCEA's pay offer😡
We overwhelmingly rejected it.
Facts matter!
#ucuRISING
English

We've been taking to the airwaves again to get the message out that our members want this dispute to end, but it's up to the employers to make an improved offer
The low pay, overwork, equality pay gaps & rampant job insecurity that blights our sector must end

@BrightonUCU @uniofbrighton @UCEA1 Are women, black and disabled staff paid less for the same job then?
English

In #ucuRISING we are fighting FOR pay equality for women, black and disabled staff, FOR manageable workloads & AGAINST casualisation.
Instead of working with us, @uniofbrighton& @UCEA1 want to starve us into submission.

This is my meal for tonight because all I can afford is donated potatoes and a tin of beans since @uniofbrighton stole 100% of my wages for not marking 3 dissertations. This is how lecturers are treated here, which @ucu @BrightonUCU are trying to change. Help @BootstrapCook
