This is typical of an issue among the left in general (progressives and centrists alike) — a “celebritification” of politicians that make any sort of objective discussion impossible. It’s immediately personalized as if you’re debating favorite music acts.

I think making excuses or downplaying Trump’s clear abuse of the rule of law because it’s being used against people you disagree with politically (Cuba travelers) is effectively abandoning the principle that the rule of law should apply consistently, regardless of ideology.
