Working in crypto requires knowledge in cryptography, economy, finance, game theory, politics, and sociology. All these fields are in motion 24/7. Maybe people are leaving crypto because they need a bigger challenge

@owklama It’s a big topic every crypto winter. But this time, I think people are exhausted by what’s ahead and are shifting toward more mainstream industries

I’ve noticed that a lot of crypto tech influencers and DevRels are pivoting to AI. It’s kind of wild to watch and honestly it reinforces the feeling that crypto today isn’t really technology-driven anymore but price-driven. In previous bear markets, when prices dropped, that was usually the signal to go back to building, builders doubled down on infrastructure, research, and protocol design, the vibe was “back to fundamentals.” This time feels different, Instead of retreating into innovative tech, many people seem to be stepping sideways into AI or chasing whatever narrative has stronger momentum. Maybe part of the reason is because until recently there wasn’t another technology that could compete with the novelty and innovative nature of blockchains tech. Crypto had the “future tech” spotlight almost to itself. AI changed that.. It’s tangible, it’s moving insanely fast, and the applications are immediately visible which makes it harder for crypto to feel like the cutting edge in the same way it once did. At the same time, within crypto itself, a lot of the energy has shifted toward building gambling tools and speculative platforms and not necessarily because people are incapable of deeper innovation but because it’s the fastest way to capture capital. It’s easier to build something that rides volatility than something that advances the core technology which over time that incentive structure shapes the industry. So crypto feels stuck because many talented builders either moved to AI or stayed in crypto but focused on short-term, high-liquidity products. We get less fundamental research, fewer ambitious protocol experiments and more tools optimized for trading and speculation. The technology still has depth. The question is whether the industry’s incentives still reward exploring it.

We believe stablecoins like @usdc are setting the stage for a new fintech renaissance and broader global access to financial services. Sending money should be as easy as sending a text message. Stablecoins make that possible: cheap, fast, and global, using currencies people already trust. Some of the fastest-growing YC startups in recent years like @get_aspora and @DolarApp use stablecoins to power faster, cheaper financial services across India and Latin America. Plus, with the passage of the GENIUS Act and growing adoption by financial institutions, we’re bullish. Whether crypto-focused or not, we expect many YC startups to use crypto in some way, from payments to banking to capital raising.
