There are several ways we can compare the education our children and young people receive with that received by the same received, say, 100 years ago, in English-speaking countries. Here is one of them.
Compare what a bright boy, like C. S. Lewis, or a bright girl, like Dorothy Sayers, knew about English literature, continental literature, ancient Greek and Roman literature, and history, with what a Ph. D. in English, classics, history, or one of the main European languages knows about them now.
Lewis did not consider himself a prodigy. (He had a brother, after all, who was no slouch when it came to the same things Lewis loved.) When he talks about education, he is clearly not thinking of the exceptional. He is not thinking about what to do when you meet a nine-year-old Ramanujan. (I imagine that such children still exist, and that some of them manage not to be derailed, frustrated, or destroyed by the best efforts of those who have designed our schools.) We know this, because when he talks about a boy struggling through ancient Greek grammar, he knows that there will come a time when suddenly the sun will rise for that boy's mind, and he will see, in wonder, that all his sweat will have been worth it. The boy he uses for an example is just a kid at one of what we'd call classical schools. No doubt he is above average in intelligence, but then, so -- we hope -- are people who now get their doctorates in literature.
I might go a little farther. Aside from a Ramanujan or a James Clerk Maxwell, does the bright prospective major in X (whatever X is) know as much about X as Lewis knew about literature at age 18? I don't think so.
We might also turn the tables, thus. Which is more likely, that C. S. Lewis at age 18 knew what a halogen is, or that a bright college freshman aiming to study chemistry now will know what blank verse is?
A couple of weeks ago, I was taken to task for saying that almost none of my college freshmen -- certainly no more than 1 in 50 -- have been able to tell me what the Tropic of Cancer is. They assumed I was talking about prospective English majors. I wasn't. The freshmen I taught were simply freshmen, of all majors, and a lot of them were going to go into biology or chemistry. My point was that general knowledge among college students is in the tank. This is something I've known for 41 years -- ever since I began teaching them.

--Waive the three-year waiting period, making him eligible to be placed on the ballot for the next class.

Find out where your local Commonwealth Attorney stands on prosecuting the new unconstitutional Spanberger gun ban. Email them or call their office. Insist on a straight answer. It’s a simple Yes or No question. As lawyers, they will understand that. You deserve to know!

A point brought up to me today by multiple people is that these prosecutors are putting pressure on commonwealth’s attorneys in other conservative localities. If they do enforce the new law, they could face a primary from the right.

@thedrmikejones Actually, commonwealth's attorney's do get to pick and choose what laws they will enforce, thanks to the actions of Democrat lawmakers in 2020. Don't like it? Take it up with @ssurovell, since he was the Senate sponsor of the bill signed by Northam.
