New ride summary on @transitapp. Very cool to see average and max speeds! The the max is a bit glitchy in this case as Metro tops out at 70 mph.

With vehicles on every track, this corridor could hold about 2,700 passengers in each direction. I estimate hourly capacity at about 30,000 per hour. Super cool corridor!

Union Station is unsurprisingly the most used station on the Metro network. The downtown hubs, Gallery Place and Metro Center are the other busiest. I’m honestly surprised Navy Yard is the busiest station on 10% of days, even with the home game crowds.

These ridership reports are making me curious about the distribution of most used stations. Metro Center and Union are very common of course… Navy Yard can pull through on the weekends. Which other stations make it frequently?

@SS_DCTransit The peak commuter MARCs are like hell breaking loose. Usually I commute odd hours but anything 6:45-8:00 or 4:40-5-:30 in Union Station typically has standing room only waiting for trains

Sometimes I take Amtrak between Washington and Baltimore instead of MARC. Amtrak is almost always busy. MARC is usually fairly quiet.

@ShitTrek It all depends when you book. For a lower demand train, fare is often similar to MARC or ~2X (the minimum fare is cheaper). It can be 5X for busier trains, especially with last minute booking.

@MetrorailModel Yes, that would be super interesting. For the Silver Spring shutdown they released overall stats. IIRC the shuttle ridership was about half of Metro ridership from the previous year.

@SS_DCTransit Would be a heavy undertaking, but I’d be curious the breakdown of normal western Red Line riders who (a) took the shuttle (appears to be about 1/3rd), (b) drove to Glenmont or Wheaton, (c) took MARC, or (d) just worked from home/foregone the trip entirely

Based on typical ridership of 5-6K at Friendship Heights, something like 10-11K riders are taking the Red Line shuttle and heading into DC. I bet this is ~half the number who normally take the Red Line this way under normal conditions.

@MetrorailModel I’m sure the majority are going downtown, but there are also lot of jobs at Medical Center and Bethesda plus some people reverse commuting towards Rockville. Hard to say without seeing some data.

@SS_DCTransit Typical weekday in 2026 has approx 30k entries between Bethesda and Shady Grove. Tough to know how many are traveling to points south of Friendship Heights, but I imagine it’s most passengers. This would presume approx 2/3rds changed their travel habits during the shutdown
