🌳💧 Forests are nature’s water filters, keeping our rivers and streams clean. With climate change disrupting water cycles, sustainable forest management and agroforestry are key to protecting the vital links between trees, water, and people. 🔗: bit.ly/3lmvK66 #WorldWaterDay #ForestsMatter

Today as we mark the World Water Day, we would like to highlight these words from UNSG's Special Envoy on Water, who is also one of our Women Changemakers 2026 H.E Retno Marsudi, "We must accelerate action that places women and girls at the centre – not only as beneficiaries, but as partners, professionals and decision-makers." - Retno Marsudi un.org/en/observances… #WomenAndWetlands #WomenChangemakers #IWD2026 #Water

Water is a gift. But it can take the shape of a curse, arriving all at once and leaving nothing but destruction behind. In Mozambique, nearly one million people were displaced when the Limpopo burst its banks. The same resource that sustains life is becoming one of its greatest threats. This is not bad luck. It is the consequence of decades of unchecked emissions from the world's wealthiest nations. On #WorldWaterDay, let's remember that water doesn't turn on us. We turn on each other, by refusing to answer for the damage we cause. See firsthand what the damage can look like in our latest documentary. youtube.com/watch?v=i0jW0_…

You've heard it before, but we will never stop saying it. The people least responsible for the climate crisis are paying the highest price. This is exactly what the Loss and Damage Fund was created to address. And yet, with pledges still below $1 billion, the gap between what has been promised and what is being lost grows wider every single day.

POWER UPDATE | The ongoing Iran war is exposing a deeper vulnerability in the global energy system. According to Simon Stiell, head of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the crisis is an “abject lesson” in the risks of relying on fossil fuels. As tensions escalate, energy markets are already feeling the shock. Gas prices in European Union countries have surged by 50% in just two weeks, highlighting how quickly geopolitical conflict can drive energy instability. Stiell warned that fossil fuel dependence is eroding national security, leaving countries vulnerable to price spikes, supply disruptions, and geopolitical pressure. His message is clear: renewable energy isn’t just about climate action, it’s about energy security.

Take a moment to read this before our consultations on the @_AfricanUnion Theme of the Year 2️⃣0️⃣2️⃣6️⃣ begin! 🔗 bit.ly/2026CN The African Union has set 2026 as the year of “Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of #Agenda2063.” This focus reflects ongoing realities across the continent. Access to safe #water and #sanitation remains uneven, while climate pressures continue to strain existing systems and affect livelihoods, #health, and economic activity. The Concept Note outlines how the AU is approaching these challenges. It connects water and sanitation to broader development priorities and highlights the need for stronger governance, investment in resilient systems, better #data, and coordinated action across countries. Our upcoming consultations are built on this foundation. Read the Concept Note ahead of time and reflect on what it means in your context. Come prepared to share practical insights and grounded proposals! 🔗 bit.ly/2026CN #AUTOTY2026 #YearOfWaterAndSanitation #ClimateAction #ClimateChange #CleanWaterForAll

HE Retno L. P. Marsudi HE Retno L. P. Marsudi's mother prioritised  her daughters’ education, instilling in them the importance of giving back to society and investing in the future of women – even when awareness of women’s equal rights to education was limited. She shared her perspective: “What the world needs now is investment in putting women in strategic and decision-making positions. When women lead, changes take place.” Gain deeper insight into Her Excellency’s international work : ramsar.org/person/retno-l… #WomenAndWetlands #WomenChangemakers #IWD2026 #Water

In honour of women's month, we asked our colleague Amy Giliam Thorp to share her reflections on gender equity, climate leadership, and what keeps her going. This is what she said. 👇 12 years in the climate space has taught me one thing above all else: Progress on gender equity is never individual. It is collective. Over more than a decade, I have had the privilege of being led by strong women and working alongside brilliant female colleagues. Those relationships changed how I see this work. They taught me that getting women into the room is only the beginning. What matters is what happens once they are there. Gender equity is not only about equal representation in organisations or decision-making processes. It is fundamentally about equal voice, respect, and meaningful participation. Sometimes that has meant challenging the structure of meetings. Sometimes it has meant reframing the narrative entirely. Becoming a mother deepened my appreciation of the multiple roles women navigate—in leadership, in professional life, in care work, in family—and reminded me that real progress means valuing all of them. On the harder days, I draw strength from the incredible women who have touched my life. Their courage reminds me that this work is not carried alone. It never has been.

Today our Secretary General @MumbaMusondam had an engaging conversation with Ambassador of Ireland to the UN Noel White. Ireland which has 45 Ramsar sites signed the Convention in 1985 and has since done tremendous work restoring peatlands from former commercial peat extraction sites. The two discussed key areas of collaboration particularly relating to opportunities to mainstream Wetlands into #EU policies and external action. The Secretary General also highlighted the involvement of the Convention in the preparation of the #UNWaterConference2026 We look forward to continued partnership in 2026 and beyond. #Collaboration4Wetlands
