#Somalia's corrections system received a boost today with the opening of the Bay Region Prison in #Baidoa, the largest city in #SouthWestState - built with support from @SIDA and @EU_in_Somalia and operationalized by the @UN through the Joint Justice and Corrections Programme, the new prison is focused on enhancing #prisoner rehabilitation. #JusticeReform

As part of @UN support for the development of a secure and humane corrections sector across Somalia, @UNTMIS_ prisons experts recently concluded a 3-day workshop in #Kismayo with officials from #Jubaland's Custodial Corps and Ministry of Justice - the training focused on the categorisation and classification of prisoners, managing risks and needs and #rehabilitation.

As part of @UN's commitment to strengthening the #RuleOfLaw in #Somalia, 23 officials from the Custodial Corps recently participated in #Mogadishu in a three-day #UN-supported workshop on Prison Security Management. They enhanced their skills in #HumanRights, dynamic security, and searching techniques to better serve their communities.

Recently in #Jowhar, a @UN-supported two-day workshop brought together 20 participants from #Hirshabelle's legal and #justice sectors, including Ministry of Justice - they explored ways to improve justice delivery through community engagement, trust-building, and nonviolent communication.

Having professional corrections officers helps promote rehabilitation, reduce recidivism and pave the way for a safer society - recently, in #Kismayo, experts and officials from @MoJCAJubaland, @UNODC and @UNSomalia concluded a five-day workshop to empower 30 ministerial and #Jubaland Custodial Corps staff members with dynamic security training aligned with #MandelaRules, relevant laws and #humanrights.

In #BeletWeyne today, @UN judicial experts concluded a 3-day workshop with #Hirshabelle judges, prosecutors, justice ministry officials and alternative dispute mechanism providers - the training aimed to develop skills in the areas of trust-building and enhancing the legitimacy of the justice system, as well as strengthen #justice service delivery through increased community engagement.

In #Kismayo, 22 justice and security officials from #Jubaland recently participated in a @UN-supported training jointly organised with @mojcajubaland to enhance their capacity on how to provide better assessment and safety for conflict-affected #children in #Somalia.

In #Kismayo this week, the #Jubaland Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs is holding a @UN-backed, two-day forum with government, civil society and intl. partners to consider the needs of the #FMS's corrections sector - after a #prison visit, a workshop was held to discuss support for humane and efficient prison management.

Fifteen female @SoPoliceForce officers yesterday participated in a one-day 'Women in Uniform Network' training in Beletweyne, Hirshabelle State. The training, organised by @UNSomalia Police & ROLSIG, and facilitated by #ATMIS Police, aimed to enhance communication, address challenges, and increase female recruitment in law enforcement. As part of its support for strengthening #Somalia's maritime sector, @UNSomalia recently partnered with @MOP_Somalia, @ONSSomalia and @IMOSecurity to hold a 'National Workshop on Whole of Government Approach to Maritime Security' in #Mogadishu - it brought together 30 participants from across the #FGS's maritime institutions to engage in improving maritime security governance coordination and safeguarding the country's strategic maritime domain.

A key step in the construction of a new #prison in #Kismayo took place today with a ground- breaking ceremony attended by senior #Jubaland government reps - built by @UNOPS_Somalia, funded by @EU_in_Somalia and technically supported by @UNSomalia, the prison will help to ensure a secure and humane corrections system in #Somalia.

With the aim of ensuring better #security and a fair #justice system for the people of #Hirshabelle, #Somali govt. officials, civil society and traditional elders recently gathered to discuss the way forward with the recently-enacted Hirshabelle State Police Act at a @UN-supported workshop, organised by @MoISHirshabelle.
