Another struggle with a drunk, aggressive man in Firth Park, Sheffield the other day. He clearly had problems and we did everything we could NOT to arrest him but he gave us no choice in the end. Trying to bite me was the final straw. The only muzzle I’ll accept near my face:

It is with a very heavy heart we are sorry to inform you all that after a short illness we sadly lost our gorgeous Harris. He was a huge personality, loved by us all and everyone who met him and had a great future as a police horse. We are all heartbroken. #StandTall #PHHarris

Training day yesterday focussing on ground obstacles. Foggy’s one of our best but caught me out when he lost confidence with the see-saw. Once you’ve started you MUST end with a win/win situation for you both, even if he just put a foot on. He must trust me, and I him. What a guy

@PC_Reed I would use a twitch, no risk, no nonsense and he will soon get over his imaginary fears.

1. Trimming Foggy 🧵 Trimming horses can be extremely dangerous. Foggy’s previous owners had to sedate him to do it because he put them in danger. We’ve done it here too, along with other tactics to distract him like loud music or a “lickit”.

PH Wortley (Sully). A 4 year-old (nearly 5) Shire standing a massive 18 hands. One of our most friendly horses. His preferred adjectives are: Gorgeous. Trustworthy. Loving. Playful. Brave. Huge. Calm. Delightful.

Whilst skipping Bawtry out he left his net to pester me for attention. We’ve moved him to an outside stable so he gets more fresh air and he’s really improved. We’ve also adopted a couple of very tame racing pigeons who’ve taken up residence. Moose is NOT a fan!

When @PC_Reed said he was joining the mounted section my jaw hit the floor, he’s one of the greatest tactical advisors I’ve known and taught around the world about crowd dynamics He’s now learned horse dynamics I’m so glad he’s happy doing it 😊👍

PH Wortley (Sully) is so sociable and friendly that he always crowds you for some affection. Whilst it’s lovely, it could be very dangerous because if he did “spook” he would run through you. Today I spent some time working with him on respecting the space a bit. Safety first.
