Which comes closest to your view, when it comes to MPs having second jobs? Should not be allowed at all: 38% Should generally not be allowed, with exceptions: 30% Should generally be allowed, with exceptions: 13% Should be allowed to have any second jobs: 5% yougov.co.uk/topics/politic…

@Jean__Fisch Why would they waste all this money on a surgical mask study when they could have spent it on a respirator study? The small reductions in risk here are consistent with the idea that surgical masks are a completely inappropriate tool.

This is a fascinating study about masks because it yields "hard" figures 4.5k people were randomly assigned to a control & mask wearing group for 14d During this period of high (~5% weekly) infection incidence, masks in public spaces reduced the infection risk by 15-40% 1/

Incredible study 🇳🇴 RCT of surgical masks for reducing respiratory infections Wearing a mask for 14d reduced onset of symptoms of respiratory infection (OR 0.71, 0.58-0.87) Absolute risk difference of ~3% What does this mean? 1/🧵 bmj.com/content/386/bm…

Starmer doing everything he can to create a left wing Reform style movement. Remember that the problem with Corbyn's vote was that it was "too concentrated". They would take a lot of seats.

Can we get rid of these two at the side, Rachel Reeves, clever as she undoubtedly is, knows how to open a door by herself.
The New Statesman@NewStatesman

“Reeves is today announcing plans to bring back mandatory housing targets, which Tory backbenchers tore down, and to boost building on the green belt. It was in the manifesto. @p_surridge Many of them voted for Corbyn 5 years ago. And we know that their vote is concentrated enough so they can actually take out constituencies. A left wing Reform style movement could take shape?

The voters are broadly united on economics and public services, they've (for now at least) rejected culture wars appeals. Maybe they'll be really happy with what Labour does and the most left wing that would be unhappy have already left the voter coalition

What if, having lost the most vulnerable votes to the Greens and Independents already, the remaining voter coalition for Labour is actually quite strong?

@tombennett71 I thought the trip was a reward for good behaviour? Perhaps at least communication could be improved here. Your points are very important.

Many students have huge obstacles in their lives. Sometimes because of this some of them struggle to follow reasonable instructions at school. If the school risk-assesses their participation in a trip that would take them into a chaotic & overwhelming environment, and finds it can’t reduce the risk, then they can’t go. This is to protect the student from their own behaviour, from running away, from harming themselves, or from ruining the trip for others. It’s an act of care to do so. NOT to do so is an enormous safeguarding risk to the student. It’s easy to create scenarios of hypothetical, oppressed students. But teachers everywhere know that saying ‘no’ to the child who shouldn’t go, is a last resort, and done for professional and compassionate reasons.

There's a remarkable similarity between the pattern of variation during the past few years (2021-2024), which is associated with a La Nina-to-El Nino transition, and what was seen during the interval 2013-2016. The difference is the overall warming (~0.2C) that's occurred since.

IPCC climate model projections compared against latest (Berkeley Earth) global temperature observations (via @Hausfath). We're seeing the predicted steady warming. The warming will continue as long as carbon emissions continue. That's entirely up to us. #UrgencyAndAgency

@moog77 @CathNoakes @TAH_Sci Don't we have results from some actual experiments in schools (or university dorms, or offices) to show that better air quality did actually lead to less respiratory disease among the group of occupants? (Not just less transmission in that environment).

@CathNoakes @TAH_Sci Mildred Wells did try to attempt this, but not with any noticeable effect. That's why I wonder about other routes of transmission, especially close range inhalation where these interventions probably have little impact

#TBT Why we shouldn't expect "cleaner indoor air" to impact respiratory disease transmission: 1955 Wells, the pioneer of using UV irradiation, notes that it is obvious that irradiating a classroom merely increases the probability of a susceptible pupil catching a cold elsewhere.
