New from @rayshafarah in our group published in @JACCJournals 🔸 A single measurement of 4 blood-based biomarkers in midlife, namely CAD PRS, hsCRP, LDL-C, and Lp(a), is strongly predictive of future CAD incidence in both sexes and across the age spectrum from 40 to 69 years 🔸 A biomarker-based prediction model achieves comparable performance with clinical risk calculators and may identify populations who are not detected using a traditional clinical risk calculator, creating an opportunity for improved primary prevention, particularly in younger age groups, where the performance of biomarker-based screening is highest. 🔸 Interpreting risk as a cumulative burden of genetic, lipid, and inflammatory pathways provides a straightforward approach to prioritizing earlier, targeted primary prevention. Article: authors.elsevier.com/a/1mnoA2d9GI5k… Builds on prior work form Paul Ridker et al in @NEJM last year nejm.org/doi/full/10.10… going from 3 to 4 biomarkers by adding genetics @MinSeoKim_MD @buutruong11 @YangSui @somijemmacho @AniruddhPatelMD @pnatarajanmd @MGBResearchNews @broadinstitute

PCI in cancer- my talk in #IndiaLive - challenging group of patients that will represent 5-10% of your practice At increased risk of ischemic and bleeding events Not all pts are HBR, some benefit from longer DAPT Use precise- dapt cancer score

@JEscaned @ihtanboga @DFCapodanno @PCRonline Bottom line, when embarking on DEB, we need to acknowledge that near 20 % of lesions will require a stent to finish the treatment. With this in mind, the strategy is reasonable specially in compelling clinical situations such as HBR and patients with Cancer

Congratulations to the team at TASH in Ethiopia for undertaking their 100th primary PCI - it's been a privilege to be a small part of this milestone, The highlight of my career was working in Ethiopia for 2 weeks and supporting them virtually and watching them grow a primary PCI service in Ethiopia Congratulations to @TTelila and @drmerid - they have worked tirelessly in creating @HeartAEthiopia to make this happen. They have changed many people's lives in their country despite living in the USA. Congratulations to @adane_petros8 @ChalaFekadu12 sister kono and all the team for doing this without payment and dedicated funds often Thank you to our industry partners such as @BiosensorsLtd @terumoisuk @cordis and others who supported my mission to Ethiopia with charitable donations of kit. Thank you to @flyethiopian for supporting the transfer of volunteers and kit I can't wait for the next mission in July 2026. Happy New Year everyone @mirvatalasnag @TCTMD @alaide_chief @parthaskar @DrAsifQasim

💥 About a year ago, our mission team witnessed a moment that changed everything : THE Mekonin Story A 40-year-old taxi driver (Mekonin) —a husband and a father of three—collapsed into full cardiac arrest at a major university hospital that, at the time, could not save him. 🎯 Not because the science was lacking. Not because the knowledge was absent. But because essential supplies were unavailable and dependable systems of care were not yet in place. Through an extraordinary and HEROIC effort of HAE Mission #2 team and local professionals, he was resuscitated and rushed to the nearest facility where heart attack care (Primary PCI) could be performed. That intervention saved not only his life, but the lifeline of his young family. What made this moment even more painful—and deeply personal—was that the hospital unable to care for him was my own beloved medical school. A place I remain profoundly grateful to for training me. 🎯 Yet, like many institutions across the continent, it has lost generations of its trainees (myself included ) to brain drain instead of benefiting from their skills. That experience forced an undeniable truth into the open. The same procedure that is “routine” and lifesaving in high-income settings continues to claim hundreds of lives in low-resource environments—not because it cannot be done, but because access is denied. From that realization, Heart Attack Ethiopia (HAE) took action. We leveraged the story of that taxi driver and entered into an MOU with Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital (TASH) to test what was possible—launching a two-phase pilot program designed to treat Ethiopians suffering heart attacks regardless of their financial situation. Today, on behalf of our boards , Obse and I are deeply proud and humbled to report to the world: 👉Our exceptional local cardiologists at TASH have now successfully performed life-saving interventions for 100 patients! 👉One hundred precious lives saved. 👉One hundred families spared immeasurable loss. ❤️ Obse and I were deeply honored to join you all virtually at 2:00 a.m. this morning to witness and support the 100th lifesaving procedure. This milestone highlights a fundamental and often overlooked truth: 🔐 The greatest unmet need in interventional cardiology today is not innovation—it is access! My heart is full, and my happiness is twofold—pride in being a graduate of TASH and gratitude for being a small part of the much larger vision carried forward by the leadership and executives of Heart Attack Ethiopia Inc ✊🏾 I am profoundly thankful to our local physicians and nurses who rose to this challenge with excellence and courage; to the mentors from the United States and the United Kingdom; to the volunteers; and to the industry partners who believed in building more durable systems rather than offering temporary solutions. 🎯 There is also a lesson here for every high-profile leader, policymaker, and high-net-worth individual who visits or transits through Ethiopia via our busy airline corridors. 👉Among the 100 lives saved by our local team, 6 were foreign nationals—people in Ethiopia for business, travel, or transit—underscoring a powerful reality: This service is not a luxury. It is a necessity—for Ethiopians and for the global community alike. And most importantly, this is just the beginning. 🔑 We invite donors, philanthropists, industry partners, and local and national government leaders to join us in building a more durable, scalable, and lasting collaboration—one that moves beyond pilot programs to permanent systems of care, strengthens local capacity, and ensures that no life is lost simply because access was out of reach. 🎯 Today, we celebrate 100 lives saved and Tomorrow, together, we can save thousands. @FMoHealth @MekdesDaba @fitsumaregaa @dereje_dugumaMD @mmamas1973 @SCAI @ACCinTouch @DrTedros @DrSenait @Medtronic @AbbottNews @BSCCardiology @terumoisuk @PiedmontHealth @ArtivionInc @BiosensorsLtd @cordis

Sad to hear of the passing of MP Ghassan Skaff. A respected physician turned politician, he worked to build bridges among Lebanese parties and between reformist movements and the political establishment. Sincere condolences to his widow, Attorney Mayssam Younes, and his family🕯️

Yesterday, the @AUB_Lebanon gathered for a Festschrift in honor of its 16th President, Dr. @DrFadloKhuri , an unforgettable day that started at 8 00 AM, brimming with stories, laughter, tears, and heartfelt reminiscences. Friends, colleagues, scientists and scholars from around the world came together to pay tribute to a man whose life has been a deep commitment to education, science, and love for this institution. My first encounter with Fadlo was in 2015 at AUB, when I was delivering a keynote address and noticed him in the audience. That moment was the start of a friendship that grew stronger with time, a bond that extended to our families and became a source of gratitude in my life. Dr. Khuri’s journey is both brilliant and deeply human. A pioneering oncologist at @MDAndersonNews later at Winship Cancer Institute at @EmoryUniversity , he dedicated his career to advancing cancer research and patient care before returning home in 2015 to lead AUB through its most turbulent years. He has often said: “Science evolves, but character endures”. His leadership embodies that truth: revitalizing academic tenure, tripling financial aid, launching AUB Online, establishing @AUBMediterraneo in Cyprus, and transforming the @AUBMC_Official into a state-of-the-art institution. Under his watch, AUB stood as the pillar of hope through economic collapse, the Beirut port blast, and the pandemic. Yet beyond these milestones lies his humanity. The president who walked the campus and spoke with every gardener, student, and professor alike. The leader who responded to emails at 2 00 AM because every voice mattered. The team builder who empowered others, chose the best people, lifted them up, and made the impossible possible. At the heart of his values stands the towering influence of his late father, Professor Raja N. Khuri, dean of the faculty of medicine and one of AUB’s most distinguished physicians, whose life of service and academic excellence shaped Fadlo’s sense of duty. And no portrait would be complete without honoring his wife Lamya who has been the steadfast engine behind his journey, sharing in both the burdens and the triumphs. Visionary, adaptable, resilient, he never said, “I have a dream”, but rather, “I have a plan”. His presence transforms every space, and his legacy will endure long after his presidency. Because if the sky is your limit, there is only one place to learn to fly: AUB. *What is a Festschrift? A German word, a Festschrift is an academic tradition where colleagues, students, and friends contribute essays and tributes to honor a distinguished figure at a milestone. This Festschrift at AUB yesterday marked not only Fadlo’s tenure, but also 3 decades of growth, healing, and vision, recognizing his achievements, his character, and the countless lives he has touched. #aub #education #sciences #research #ricardokaram #festschrift
