Stop whatever you're doing — especially if you're reading The New York Times — and play with your kids.

Over the last 20-30 years, I think we made a serious mistake in America. We stopped teaching the building blocks of Greek philosophy, Locke, and the Western foundations of democracy. We removed them from classrooms in the name of progress, without asking what we might lose in the process. Teaching diverse cultures and perspectives matters a ton. But removing the foundations entirely leaves young people without the context to understand why democracy matters, why the rule of law matters, why, as Churchill put it, democracy is the worst system except for all the others. The same goes for market forces, capitalism, and the American experiment itself. It’s imperfect, but history has shown us what the alternatives look like. When I immigrated from Mexico in 1984, I arrived in a country that was exporting its values, like kindness, civility, freedom, rule of law. Today, I worry we've stopped cherishing those values at home, let alone sharing them with the world. We don't have to choose between honoring our foundations and continuing to grow. We have to do both. What's something from your own education that you wish more young people were still being taught today?

@engele @EODHappyCaptain Arizona was 4500 (in state) when I went in 2005 and is 14000 now. 200+% increase. Google says it was 1150 in 1983 so That would be over 1000% increase in just tuition and fees alone.

@EODHappyCaptain That number is also just stupidly not true unless you are including elite private schools. State universities and community colleges are more expensive, but nothing like that.

Parenting is like how Truman explained being ready to be president “There is no experience you can have that prepares you for being president except being president.”

I think there is a misunderstanding of what it means to be “ready.” Take this with a grain of salt as all 3 of our kids came as life’s natural surprises and not strategic decisions, but I can’t imagine there would ever be a time when I would say yes now is the time.
Ross Douthat@DouthatNYT

I think a strong message to both sexes is that relationships are less important than education/career choices until you hit a level of success at which you're "ready" for marriage/kids - and the unready period takes up a lot of prime family-forming years. x.com/olgakhazan/sta…

A lot of people are asking why more politicians are not like Ben Sasse. Because voters will not elect them, that’s why. They may say they care about character, but most don’t vote that way. Instead they vote party line, ideology, self-interest, or out of pique against a perceived enemy. How can we expect our leaders to embody higher levels of virtue if a majority of voters don’t make personal character a red line? It looks like we get the leaders we deserve.

Every American should watch every second of this video. Thank you, @BenSasse.

If you are under 30 and politically active, please seek out someone over the age of 60 who lived through the political unrest and violence of the late 1960s and 70s: assassinations, bombings, hijackings, etc. You don’t want this.

I'll probably get clobbered for this, but here goes: Please, can everyone, right or left, MAGA or anti-MAGA, Republican or Democrat, stop catastrophizing and trying to get everyone on your side worked up into a rage? It's not Flight 93. We're not on the verge of fascism. We do not need to take desperate measures. Our fellow citizens with whom we disagree are not devils incarnate or personifications of evil. We need to argue with our political adversaries--passionately perhaps--but with respect for their humanity and dignity. We don't need to destroy them. That mustn't be our aim. We all say we believe in democracy. Good! But democracy is all about persuading, giving reasons, engaging one another as fellow citizens, despite our disagreements. Let's rebuild civic friendship. We can do this. (Thank you for your attention to this matter.)

The flag that Rick Monday rescued 50 years ago today is headed to Cooperstown! OTD in 1976, Monday, a Cubs outfielder and veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, grabbed an American flag from two protesters who had run onto the field at Dodger Stadium and attempted to burn it. Monday, the longtime Dodgers broadcaster who played 19 years in the Major Leagues, was a two-time All-Star and a World Series champion, has often been asked about the moment. “If that’s all you’re ever remembered for, that’s not a bad thing at all,” Monday told MLB Network in 2016. Monday still owns the flag and it will be on loan to the Baseball Hall of Fame this summer as part of America’s 250th birthday celebration. In addition, Monday will be honored on July 25 during induction weekend.

I didn’t like USAID. But watching people gleefully mock a woman for having to start over at ~60 is bleak. You can disagree with someone’s politics without losing basic empathy. The internet has broken a lot of brains.

Amid all the negative news in 2026, how about this — a neighborhood in Oklahoma was *wiped off the map* with ZERO fatalities. The watches and warnings happened perfectly. The science unfolded right. The residents did exactly what they should have. This is so encouraging.

Some of the damage our crews are finding in Enid this morning. At least EF3 damage has been found so far in the SW side of Enid. #okwx
