Earth Day 2026; on a planet where warming is accelerating, Earth loses resilience, 7 of 9 planetary boundaries breached - is a reminder we cannot exclude pushing our "blue dot" along a Hothouse Earth path, drifting towards a less and less liveable home. sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

An objectively wild career move and one I couldn’t be happier with or prouder of. The world needs more local reporters more than it needs more national ones and even if I go back to national reporting one day, I’ll be a much better reporter for this experience.
Special Puppy 🧦🐵@SpecialPuppy1

I was wondering why this guy disappeared from politics Twitter. Voluntarily going from NBC political reporter to editor of a regional newspaper covering a population of roughly 150k people seems like a wild career move, but if it makes you and your loved ones happy, go for it.

This is what it's all about: “Many, many people have reached out to me to say that if they hadn’t watched that, they would have not properly prepared. They’ve thanked me for ‘saving their lives.’ ... it’s been extremely heartening.” nytimes.com/2024/10/08/cli… 🎁🔗

If everyone was aware of how many flood disasters are ravaging the planet lately, people would have a much better awareness and understanding of the climate challenge humanity faces. This is just the beginning. The below thread compiles many of them.
Volcaholic 🌋@volcaholic1

🧵 I've put together this thread to show just how much flooding has happened around the world, and this is only for the month of September—and it's not even over yet! Please share this because I don't think the message is getting out there. Türkiye... x.com/volcaholic1/st…

A lot of people are scared of growing energy demand from data centers, but @ArushiSF is completely right. Data centers are great for the grid, and DERs (distributed energy resources) can make them even more valuable. Traditional data centers are large, consistent power users. Demand on the grid varies a lot. We have to build transmission, generation, etc. to support peak load, but we only get to spread those costs over the power that's actually consumed. In ERCOT in 2023, demand varied from a minimum of 34 GW to a maximum of 86 GW. We need 86 GW of capacity (+ reserve margin), but we only have 51 GW of average demand paying for that capacity. Adding 5 GW of consistent data center demand would increase peak demand by ~6%, but it would increase average demand by ~10%. That means better utilization and lower unit costs. DERs can take that to another level. Adding a battery to a data center further increases off-peak demand without adding to peak demand. With a big enough battery, a data center can cover its own needs and export power to the grid during peaks. This can often be done using infrastructure that data centers need anyways. Mission critical data centers require redundant power capacity to ensure uptime. Most of the time that capacity sits idle, but batteries can leverage that idle capacity. Adding battery storage to a data center lets the data center better utilize its own infrastructure while also improving the utilization of grid infrastructure at large. Big data centers are paying for big grid infrastructure. That's a huge opportunity. If you're interested in energy and data centers, I highly recommend checking out Arushi's panel at SXSW. This is a hot topic for good reason. Data centers and DERs are a window into the future of energy.

Major climate action move: China will set hard targets for overall emissions from 2026 China has already (most likely) hit peak emissions this year, 6 years ahead of its 2030 goal. Hard targets will accelerate its decarbonization as it continues to add 5 large nuclear power plants in new renewables every week bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
