On the occasion of #WorldNoTobaccoDay (WNTD) 2025, Department of School Education & Literacy (DoSEL) reaffirms its commitment to fostering awareness among school students about the harmful effects of tobacco by implementing Tobacco Free Educational Institutions (#ToFEI) guidelines. The theme of this year, “Unmasking the Appeal: Exposing Industry Tactics on Tobacco and Nicotine Products,” highlights the need to educate students about the deceptive marketing strategies used by the tobacco and nicotine industry that target young minds. As part of the sustained efforts to promote tobacco-free school campuses, it is essential to empower students with knowledge that cultivates resilience against such harmful influences. In alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which advocates for providing awareness of the detrimental and damaging effects of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs, thereby empowering students to make informed, healthy life choices. By helping students say no to harmful habits, #DoSEL paves the way for a healthier, more empowered future, nurturing health-conscious, informed individuals. #NEP2020SuccessStories #SchoolEducation #Education4All #HolisticEducation #SamagraShiksha #NEP2020 #SayNoToTobacco #TobaccoAwareness

Tobacco consumption is a major cause of preventable diseases, with tobacco chewing leading to oral cancer in India. Approximately one-third of all cancer cases are tobacco related while 90% oral and lung cancers are linked to tobacco. To combat this, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has launched the Tobacco-Free Educational Institutions (ToFEI) Guidelines under the National Tobacco Control Program, which aim to eliminate tobacco sales within 100 yards of schools, creating safer environments for students. On World Cancer Day, the Department of School Education and Literacy reaffirms its commitment to making our Education Institutions tobacco-free, by implementing ToFEI guidelines.
