Tobacco consumption is a major cause of preventable diseases, with tobacco chewing leading to oral cancer in India. Approximately one-third of all cancer cases are tobacco related while 90% oral and lung cancers are linked to tobacco. To combat this, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has launched the Tobacco-Free Educational Institutions (ToFEI) Guidelines under the National Tobacco Control Program, which aim to eliminate tobacco sales within 100 yards of schools, creating safer environments for students. On World Cancer Day, the Department of School Education and Literacy reaffirms its commitment to making our Education Institutions tobacco-free, by implementing ToFEI guidelines.
