This week’s failure (and last week’s) are part of a trend that will persist for small banks.
Dodd-Frank’s Orderly Liquidation Authority was created to resolve large, systemically important financial institutions.
But as 2023 showed, the OLA will never be used. The government cannot easily unwind a large institution without knock-on risks to the banking system.
As a result, the government will continue resolving small banks the quiet way: folded into other institutions, or absorbed via private deals before they fail.
By @TheGallatin’s count, ~419 banks are showing the deterioration pattern that precedes bank resolution.
Expect more small-bank failures.

Wild how many people have built a $100M+ net worth because the took out a loan to buy some property decades ago and then rates nosedived.
Give them credit for never selling and for taking the risk- but it was luck and timing more than anything else.
If you happened to be in your 30s with some extra money to invest in the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s, you rode a crazy wave.
Yes, unless you have a way to add value, commercial real estate is largely just an interest rate bet.

On Friday, May 1, 2026, Community Bank and Trust - West Georgia was closed by the Georgia Department of Banking and Finance. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) was named Receiver. No advance notice is given to the public when a financial institution is closed. Substantially all insured deposits have been transferred to Anchor Bank, Palm Beach Gardens, FL. All shares of stock were owned by the holding company, which was not involved in this transaction.

It’s sad what is happening to Florida. Florida isn’t just beaches and sunshine, it’s quiet backroads shaded by palms, rivers that move like glass, and wild spaces where nature still feels untouched. It’s early mornings with golden light breaking through the trees, the sound of water nearby, and that calm feeling you can’t quite explain but never forget. This is the Florida that feels real, raw, peaceful, and alive. But somewhere along the way, we keep replacing that beauty with rows of identical houses, crowded streets, and developments that could exist anywhere in the world. The character fades, the silence disappears, and the land slowly loses what made it special in the first place. Growth is inevitable, but losing identity doesn’t have to be. Florida deserves more than copy-paste neighborhoods, it deserves to keep its wild side, its soul, and the natural beauty that made people fall in love with it to begin with.
