There was a time when #Dawn was rightly regarded as the lighthouse of journalism in #Pakistan steady, principled, and committed to truth. Its historic association with Muhammad Ali Jinnah gave it a moral and intellectual foundation that allowed it to navigate some of the country’s most difficult periods, including successive military and authoritarian regimes. Despite pressures, Dawn maintained a reputation for credibility. Perhaps one reason the state showed relative tolerance was that English-language journalism remained limited in reach among the general public. Yet for those engaged in policy, governance, and intellectual discourse, it was an essential platform. During my Senate tenure (2003–2008), and even while in exile, Dawn served as a reliable space to raise concerns and present perspectives that were often excluded elsewhere. It published nearly four dozen of my articles, focused on #Balochistan, federalism, constitutionalism, equality, and human and resource rights, helping ensure that these issues remained part of the national conversation. However, since around 2016, a gradual but noticeable shift began. With the expansion and increasing assertiveness of Inter-Services Public Relations and broader efforts to regulate and influence media narratives, the space for independent and dissenting voices has steadily narrowed. What we are witnessing since 2024 appears to be the most restrictive phase yet. Today, voices from Balochistan and other marginalized regions are rarely given meaningful space. Submissions go unacknowledged; engagement has diminished to silence. This is not just an editorial shift, it reflects a deeper contraction of intellectual and democratic space. It feels like witnessing a slow, painful erosion if not the quiet death of a once-vibrant tradition of journalism in Pakistan. #RIP #Journalism #Pakistan
