So how would someone game the system with Reform’s new no tax on overtime policy?
You have an employee on £36,000 per year. This is their wage which they are fully taxed on.
Your employee asks for a pay rise of £2,000 a year.
The pay rise would give them £1,600 net take home and they would pay an extra £400 in tax.
Instead of a pay rise, your employer offers you £1,700 as ‘overtime’ spread out over the year.
The employee is now £100 per year better off.
The employer saves £300 per year plus pays slightly less National Insurance too.
@samhfinance The government could put £10k for every child now into a central pot and invest that, it doesn't need to go directly to an individual from birth. There's no point funding people who aren't going to make it to retirement so the investment wouldn't need to be as high.
Counter point - it IS outrageous to pay £80 for a train journey and not get a seat. If the train is so crowded you can’t sit down you should get a hefty refund.
@Calum92Stevens@warrensbuffet2 I think it's you that's missing the point here. This is not about changing how much is paid for gas, but rather how the pricing is set for renewables.
@warrensbuffet2 Why wouldn't gas stations charge a fortune when they are maintained year round and do nothing when it's windy and sunny. But we need them when it's not windy or sunny. Do you not realise how stupid you sound
So @ofgem ‘s useless price cap is down but @OctopusEnergy ‘s new fixed tariff is around 50% higher than my last one, it’s all just a sick joke now, oh, and the car needs filling up 🫣
Following on the rent vs buy debate:
£300,000 house.
→ Mortgage interest: £12,000/year
→ Maintenance: £3,000/year
→ Insurance: £800/year
→ Stamp duty: £10,000 upfront
→ Total real cost: £25,000+ year one
£300,000 in the Nasdaq instead.
→ Average 15% annual return = £45,000/year
→ No boiler breakdowns
→ No roof repairs
→ No estate agent fees when you sell
Someone else fixes the boiler.
Someone else pays the buildings insurance.
Someone else handles the maintenance.
Renting isn’t throwing money away IF your money is working hard elsewhere.
Sometimes it’s the smartest trade in the room.
🇩🇰 Third song of the night, and already another returning act, it is Søren Torpegaard Lund, who perform the only fully Danish song tonight, "Før Vi Går Hjem".
Did #YOU feel Søren impressed enough to reach the superfinal?

@peterrhague Are you comparing like with like? That UK figure looks like post tax disposable income. Have you taken into account US health insurance costs?
Comparing UK to California
Minimum wage £12.71 ($16.80) vs $16.50
Median household income £34k ($45k) vs $95k
This is why you hear hard working Brits complain a lot.
So much for the 'environment' then. I've just taken delivery of my firsever EV. Annual car tax on it is £600 & I can now look forward to paying an additional £400 (minimum) from Apr 2028. These fuckers are taxing us all out of existence !!
