"Hungary serves as a warning about the pathway America is treading, but it also can serve as a beacon of hope that damage can be undone." My latest @FDRLST article discusses the frighteningly obvious similarities between communist and liberal iconoclasm. thefederalist.com/2023/11/06/des…

🤝 We met again with @Tsinghua_Uni, this time in Budapest. After our Leadership Academy visited Beijing last year, students from @CISSTsinghua came to Hungary for a study visit. From transatlantic relations to migration, technology, and ageing societies, one key takeaway stands out: international academic dialogue matters.

⚠️ By now, it's clear to everyone: illegal migration has triggered a severe crisis in the West.  The recent @MCC_Budapest conference, "From Open Borders to Restrictionism", focused on the evolution of 🇬🇷 Greek migration policy—now shifting under the weight of mounting pressure from the Eastern Mediterranean. 🗣 As Maria Vlachadi (University of Crete) observed:
"When Hungary closed its borders, it was perceived negatively, but it was a legal and logical solution. Greece is now doing the same." 🇭🇺 #Hungary—unlike Brussels and other member states—recognized the strategic importance of border protection as early as 2015, and has since remained committed to countering illegal migration, both at the policy level in Brussels and through concrete measures along its Schengen border. As Vlachadi also noted:
"We now face illegal migration and organized crime, not from asylum seekers." The reality on the ground has changed. What began as a refugee crisis has evolved into a pattern of irregular migration increasingly linked to smuggling networks and criminal activity, she explained. From Greece to other Mediterranean and Western European countries, a paradigm shift is underway. Far from being the outlier, Hungary was simply ahead of the curve—the first to act, not the last to understand.

In May 2023 Emmanuel Macron noted a "process of decivilization" in France, & there is a fine old English word for the collective west's defining task in the coming decades: "recivilization". The OED puts the first English use of 'recivilization' in the hot revolutionary 1790s.

2⃣ Days 1⃣0⃣Panels 2⃣0⃣+ Countries 6⃣0⃣+ Speakers 4⃣5⃣0⃣+ Attendees Today we wrapped up the Budapest-based portion of the Budapest Summit on Technology and Society, but it was far more than just another tech conference. Too few of the discussions around tech focus on progress, too few ask: what is at stake? At our summit, we asked what is worth preserving as we move forward. The answer was clear: our nation, our faith, and our families, and our humanity must remain at the heart of any progress. A heartfelt thank you to all who joined us in shaping this summit. We look forward to continuing the discussion in our many regional centers tomorrow. @Raphfel, @szlajen, @Jo__Gimenez, @jowilliams293, @TimandraHarknes, @oldbooksguy, @jameswoudhuysen, @CatherineLEcuye, @Saroj_Bishoyi25, @jareddhayden, @bkalnoky, @ccpecknold, @janfigel, @LaurentOzon, @gboszormenyi, @DanieldeLiever, @mark_bauerlein, @Norm_Lewis, @leogabo

❗️@BalazsOrban_HU becoming a political target in the battle for academic freedom in 🇭🇺Hungary; but rejecting his PhD thesis based on his political affiliation is akin to barring a qualified athlete from competing in the Olympics because of their worldview. hungarianconservative.com/articles/opini…

I had a great time on the @DCEKGpodcast being interviewed by @RealJoeGrogan, director of the White House Domestic Policy Council under President Trump. We discussed the magnificent new classical National World War I Memorial by @SabinHoward, what to do about Brutalism in D.C., and my time as chairman of the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts, including why President Biden removed me and other commissioners in violation of 110 years of precedent.

Today, Hungary commemorates the 1956 Revolution, a defining moment in our history. Starting on October 23, it marked the most significant challenge to Soviet control in the Eastern Bloc until the fall of communism. A short thread🧵on the Revolution.

In the opening panel, @BalazsOrban_HU emphasized the importance of the #Transatlantic partnership while cautioning against bloc formation. He urged Europe and the U.S. to steer clear of a black-and-white view of geopolitics, where every nation is labeled as 'good' or 'bad.'

Speaking at “Transatlantic Partnership in a New Era,” a conference in Berlin organized by @MCC_Budapest and allies. Deindustrialization is a fate Europe must avoid. It’s bad for workers, bad for culture/society, and bad for our mutual defense in the Atlantic zone.

Cordon sanitaire, synonym of supremacy, arrogance and panic to democracy. And the EU's champion is the @EPP @ManfredWeber who prefers to side with bullies and criminals (@TheLeftPE) to exclude @PatriotsEP. Just published, my latest in @brusselssignal . 👇👇

COMMENT: Sometimes a cordon sanitaire is real, but in Brussels it is a political ploy to block millions of right-wing voters, writes @rodballester. buff.ly/47455hX

You may have noticed Hungarian accounts celebrating August 20th, but what exactly is Hungary commemorating? This holiday is a unique celebration of national survival and endurance, intertwining religious, political, and historical elements. A short🧵:
