@AaronBastani @SimonZev There used to be a station much closer to the seafront - Bournemouth West. It closed in 1965.

Bournemouth beach today. We need to complete the Victorian dream for the place: a direct tram from the train station to pier. 45 min high speed shuttles from London. Infinity pools & funicular railways striating east & west cliff. Let a 1000 lidos bloom.

Today has been the hottest day in May on record with Kew Gardens provisionally reaching 34.8°C - exceeding the previous highest May temperature in the UK by a full 2 degrees Celsius🌡️ This heat would be exceptional in the UK even in mid summer, let alone in May📈

Fixed formation trains. They cannot be extended.

.@Se_Railway Why only six carriages on the High Speed trains out to Margate? Standing room only after 2 stops and most were left behind. You manage to warn on the app for busy coastal trains and 'take water' but can't foresee extra carriages for outbound Bank Holiday mornings!!!

No InterCity. It’s one of the strongest brands the railway ever created and they should absolutely resurrect it under GBR. I hope the government doesn’t see it as too linked to BR, because it has definitely transcended it in the public consciousness.

Funny how there's no Great British Railways | Gatwick Express or Great British Railways | Heathrow Express Does this mean the HX and GX will become part of Great Western and Southern, maybe?

@theashrb It’s got a 4tph semi fast service already. I don’t think the people of Southend would need or want a slower service to the same place for little benefit (they can already go to Stratford for Liz Line & the City via GA & c2c)

@SimonZev @Captain_Deltic @HastingsDiesels Yes. 4 power cars on 8 vehicles very much helps. The norm for that fleet was of course 2 power in 6. Extra 2 for insurance and additional power. They were underpowered comp to EMUs. That fleet was so flexible- you couple anything together any way round almost.

@Charing_Steve @HastingsDiesels The capabilities of the top modern traction preservation teams amaze me too, Steve. Mind you, belting along a main line at a steady 75 is probably kinder on the traction kit than stop start on a heritage line. But this surely merits an award

Louisville (pop. 640k) and Helsinki are nearly the same population size, yet one sees 637 train departures daily, while the former hasn't seen a passenger train since 2003 (this was the train platform). Louisville is studying a Tesla tunnel, btw.

trenvista.net/noticias/oscar… Spain upgrading the 350kmh. Appears trains, signalling exists and the aim is to increase capacity. This is 6mph less than hs2's originally intended speed.

@EngFocus @philatrail Japan, Korea and France all had 360km/h prototypes running when HS2 was specified. *Not* designing for that on a project 15 years away from operation would be negligent. Japan will deploy 360km/h when the Sapporo line opens in the 2030s and now China plans for 400km/h next year.

Do you know one of the big advantages of building the full HS2? More frequent, faster local services. Specifically in, but not by any means limited to, the north of England. The complaints are always nonsense and they've made it staggeringly more expensive.
Dominic Cummings@Dominic2306

Ironically, HS2 was never even popular with voters *in the north*, they wanted focus on fast local intra-north transport instead, and thought of hS2 as 'for London'. But the entire SW1 ecosystem is so crap at politics/communication they never figured this out in 20 years

@Dominic2306 It was needed, it still is needed & now you’re proudly posting about how you directly contributed to it being more expensive for less benefit whilst demonstrating you never understood the remit. Slow clap for Dom Dom.

@RegenerationEX @ClarkeMicah Ultimately it has nothing to do with high. What it needed was trains that could accelerate quickly and a huge update in signalling that would allow far better use of the capacity of the lines and more frequent services.
