@PatrickHeizer No, it’s asking you to memorize a specific trick without explaining it well, not teaching a sense of numbers Teach the fundamentals then teach several tricks. Some work well for some, others for others

@woke8yearold When I initially read that thread, it seemed like such a wacky thing to disown one's family over, I assumed there was more to it or that I shouldn't interpret it literally

I’ve always disliked him so I’m not surprised to see something this deranged. One of the few accounts I’ve blocked so their posts won’t show up in my feed, it’s all nonsense about stuff he likes or identifies with being high status
damone.hl@defi_damone

@antoniogm You quickly deleted the last addendum to this thread… pretty nasty behavior and attitude given the context you provided. You disowned your family after retroactively acquiring personal insecurities about not attending an Ivy? You blame them for that? Insane.

@ChShersh What makes me groan is when someone adds a "comment" which is clearly just Claude-generated anyway

I miss the toxic tech culture of receiving 50+ code review comments. Now everyone just pushes AI slop and doesn’t care as long as CI is green.

@HMBrough_ I have no idea where that guy gets the impression that the phenomenon "appears to mostly be women."

I (male) was a former gifted kid. It’s what happens when you get used to coasting on your intelligence, which works until it doesn’t (Physics or OChem). The smart physician parents I know get around this by forcing young “gifted kids” to do tasks involving rote memorization and extensive busywork, eg high-level chess, or learning Mandarin while having no discernible connection to China. They don’t actually want their kid to become a chessmaster or a China Hand. They’re just doing it so they don’t have a “former gifted kid.”
Strategic Advisor@BBDaybreakEU

The 'former gifted kid' phenomenon appears to mostly be women. This makes sense: girls mature faster than boys, and are better at conforming to the structures of modern education which don't necessarily reflect the 'real world'.

@JonahDispatch It is certainly not a classic western, such as Unforgiven or Open Range, two modern, superior films. But overrated? Come on, man.

@UziCryptoo I would actually consider something like this, but not if it's illicit. The excess workload is enough stress without also having to worry about constantly deceiving my employers.

I have a friend who has been working 3 remote jobs for almost 3 years now. The financial leap is incredible. His total income is now about $320,000 a year, and this has completely changed everything for his family. He was able to pay off all his debts. The house mortgage is paid off, student loans are paid off, everything. He has about $150,000 in the bank for emergencies, and both cars are fully owned by him. So basically all the money from the other two jobs goes straight to investments. He says the workload is insane sometimes but the feeling is unreal. Be honest, would you work 3 remote jobs if it meant you took home $320k/year?

@ChrisExpTheNews Yeah obviously these guys think this particular woman's job was useless but anyone who loses that salary at that age is not going to have an easy time rebounding.

@janecoaston Forget a mile, I would guess the average American can't sprint 50m at the pace that pro distance runners run the marathon.

most people cannot run a ten minute mile. if you can, it would take you about four and a half hours to run a marathon. that is an AMAZING athletic feat.
Daniel Jones@djones5194

@janecoaston Distance runners in general don't get anywhere near the respect they deserve. With sprinters, most people intuitively understand that they could not, in their dreams run as fast as them. But they see a distance runner run some time and think "I could approximate that."

It would be great if there was more transparency. Everyone reposts some amount of memes. Is this at the account level or the post level? What's the threshold. I'm not complaining i just want to know what the rules are. I make lots of original content and if I'll make more money only posting that and not posting everything else then ok but there's no possible way to know how it works in this regard.

@ExtinguishedEng @VicVijayakumar In some ways tickets have gotten worse since my PM got his hands on Claude. They're now full of incoherent fluff which you can tell he didn't read or understand.

@VicVijayakumar No LLM would be able to decipher the tickets my PM writes. He doesn't even know what it means and tries to cover it with weird pseudo-technical gibberish that doesn't make sense from a business or technical perspective.

I'm now able to tell my agent “we are going to work on JIRA-1234” and it goes and pulls down the task, makes me a plan, I say yeah okay that looks good, and it generates the commit. I run an AI review from a different session, it finds 4 issues of varying priorities, I paste it to my original agent and say validate these findings and fix them if necessary, it creates a fix, I run another review, no more high priority issues found. I open up the code in an IDE to go over it before pushing it up for human review. Looks fine I guess, nothing crazy. I try to understand everything before I push it up for review because if this breaks, it's still my name on it. I say why did you make this one change, it gives me a reasonable explanation for why. It says something codebaity like "if you want I can suggest 2 more ways you could really tighten up this work to prevent some rare but possible regressions". I'm smart enough to not fall for it. Code pushed up, task moved to in-review. I didn't write any of it, this is not my accomplishment. Users won't care who wrote it if it works. A lot done in 20 mins but it felt soulless.
